    BEOVISION 10 Setup

    Hi Guys,

My uncle just picked up a Beovision 10 and he asked me over to take a look at it.

I immediately noticed the horrible motion assist/blur/smoothing (im not sure what B&O call it) that must be on by default that basically ruins movies by adding/smoothing frames. I always have this disabled on my panels and anyone elses I setup but I'm not sure where to do this on this set. The UI is terrible in my opinion and I couldnt beleive how many steps you have to go through just to enable an HDMI input.
Is there any reason why this information along with the combination buttons presses are not in either the TV's or the Remotes manual? I guess they dont expect their customers to be configuring these units themselves.

Anyway.. Could someone pelase tell me how to disable this smoothing/motion feature?

I did ask the B&O 'specialist' he purchased it from but that guy didnt even know what I was talking about, let alone how to disable it.

Thanks for your help, appreciate it!

p.s. Is there also a 'fit to screen' option for 1:1 pixel mapping or is this on by default?

Just as your B&O specialist, I don't know what you are talking about.

Try pressing MENU on the remote, place the cursor on OPTIONS and press RED and then GO (within 3 seconds after you pressed RED). You should now be in the "Customer service menu". Go into "Adjustments" and you will find an option called "Film mode". Try turning it off...

    Re: BEOVISION 10 Setup

It reads like the TV is doing exactly what it was doing when Uncle saw it in the showroom and caused him to buy it.  After delivery and setup, the nephew was asked to hook up X, because he is a "whiz kid on this kind of stuff". The problem, given all his experience in setting up many panels is that manual is trash, the UI is trash, the dealer is stupid and, btw, the picture is trash.  So we will now enter the service menu.....oh boy.

Well it seems strange that 'specialists' dont know about recognised issues with modern video processing techniques when so many reviewers and customers do.

You can read about the 'soap-opera effect' here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_interpolation

Also this is taken directly from a review of another unit, and is what I was looking for in the setup of this panel:

The soap-opera effect brought on by enabling [LED Motion Plus] was milder than other similar implementations, but as we failed to observe any improvement in motion clarity, we chose to leave it off.

The result was not really what we had hoped for: engaging [LED Motion Plus] introduced obvious interpolation artefacts around and even within the moving objects, so much so that measured motion resolution actually dropped paradoxically to 250

    :)

Wow, well isn't this a friendly reply.

Have you considered that the unit in the showroom was setup correctly and the one delivered was set to factory defaults? Or even the fact that the salesperson doesn't even know what motion interpolation is or recognise it as an issue when it visibly destroys the aesthetic of films when that feature is active.

First of all you have misinterpreted my original post. I said he asked me to come over and take a look at it, as in 'hey, come over and check out my new tv' not come over and set it up for me. It just so happened that I noticed the 'soap-opera effect' as soon as he switched it on and simply wanted to rectify it for him. He hadn't played back any movies at this point either and as soon as he did the effect was noticeable/distracting to him too.

I believe I am entitled to my own opinion, and my statements made about the manual and UI were in fact my own opinion. I just found it strange that such an expensive set has such a basic UI and that nowhere in the manuals does it show you have to configure hdmi inputs and then add presets to the remote. I don't know of another panel where you cant simply plug an HDMI cable in and then switch to that input.
Again, this is my opinion and if none of it bothers you then that's absolutely fine.
I also didnt refer to the dealer as stupid, I just stated the fact that he did not know what was causing this to happen.

The picture is trash... well I'm pretty sure I didn't say that either, the picture is incredible.. but the motion processing is IMO terrible and needs disabling. Personally I would want to watch a film on blu-ray exactly as it was intended frame for frame. I don't care for these inserted/smoothed frames nor do I wish to watch classic cinema look like it was shot on the set of Neighbors.

Anyway, thanks for all your input though symmes, that was really helpful!

Thanks Magnus, im sure this will be it!

Do you know the difference between film and game mode. Im guessing game mode reduces input lag?

Also there isnt a 'go' button on this BEO4, is it simply the select button in the centre of the arrows

    Re: BEOVISION 10 Setup

@Oreo, Those particular issues are defined in the owner's guide.  BTW, I didn't read your reply after the intro, because figured I might know the rest.  My original "album version" also included that your dealer should have trained your uncle to use the TV, the remote, and the manual, not to mention having loaded the correct PUC.  Amazing how well that works when the exchange is more than transactional.

But all that being said and assuming from your time stamp that you are in NA, let's say I owe you one.  Next time you have an issue like that, send me an email with your phone number.  I will call you right back and we'll work it through to a conclusion or get you an answer, in real time.  Hows' that?

Oh absolutely, they should have cooked him dinner and done some yard work afterwards too...

Thanks for all your unconstructive posts by the way, and while you arent prepared to take the time to even read my responses I appreciate that obviously you are always right and I am most definitely wrong.. whatever you end up going off track and talking about. You win. I get it.

Thanks for the offer though that is really kind of you, but I wont bother calling as I'm pretty sure you wouldn't actually have any technical answers or solutions anyway considering not one of your posts has been helpful or even relevant to my original query.

    Re: BEOVISION 10 Setup

I hope you don't get the wrong impression of this forum. Of all the forums I keep in touch with, Beoworld is by far the most sensible and civilised, with many posters receiving genuine help and advice with B&O related issues. I'm sure there has been a misunderstanding of what I consider a perfectly legitimate question.

    Welcome to Beoworld!

As to your problem, I don't have a flat panel of any description, preferring good old crt, but I agree that so called "film mode" and the like ruin the picture and I have switched it off on my 100hz Avant. I also agree that the B&O interface can be a swine, but it is part of what B&O is about, providing a usually simple interface for ordinary people. But it can be frustrating if you wish to "tweek" the odd setting. That is where Beoworld can usually help.

    Regards,

    Neil.

Thanks Neil, I appreciate your response and understanding.

It sounds like Film Mode is the culprit then, I will disable this the next time I'm over and hopefully this will solve the problem.

Do you happen to know the difference between the film and game modes?
Looking through the Beovision 10 guide which I downloaded from B&O's website it appears that there is no reference to film mode, but there is the option to turn 'game mode' on.

I wonder if turning game mode on is the equivalent of turning film mode off!?

    I own a Beovision 10 myself.

You are correct that the "Game Mode" reduces the delay, in order to enhance the gaming experience. If that turns off the "film mode" or not, I do not know. I have personally switched of Film Mode as described earlier in this thread (Service Menu). Agree that it gives an unwanted effect on films, but its a matter of taste really.

Regarding the Beo4, it could be that it´s the latest version, with a little "joystick" instead of a "GO" button. It works the same anyway.

You press in the middle to e.g. confirm choises.

Let the forum know if you have any more questions. We are here to help.

    Best regards

    Thanks for the info Hiort!

So are both Game Mode and Film Mode seperate options within the menu? I can only see references to Game Mode in the manual

    Cheers

    Re: BEOVISION 10 Setup

    Yep, they are separate options.

Film mode is only adjustable from the Service menu, so the B&O thinking there is probably that you either leave it on or leave it off, dependant on your preference.

    Re: BEOVISION 10 Setup

    Great, thanks for that.

It would be good to know what game mode actually does and if its ok to leave it enabled all the time, or just when playing a games console.

I noticed that 'game' is within the list options on the BEO4, does this enable/disable the mode?

    Re: BEOVISION 10 Setup

Correct. Press List until you have GAME in the display. Then you press GO on the Beo4 to switch on. If you press GO again GAME mode is switched off . Best thing is to try if that improves your picture processing.

Just wanted to thank those who helped out with this. Film mode is now off, game mode on for the 360, no more weird frame processing!

    Thanks again
