    Needle won't drop

    Hi everyone,

I've got a newly acquired Beogram RX-2 from late 80's... It was working very well for about 2 days, after it had been sitting for probably years. Tonight it stopped working... Pressing the Cue button will cause it to do everything it should - spin, move needle over to the first track - but then the needle will never drop. You can hear a bit of a clicking noise at this point, as if some cogs are not catching or something. After a few seconds the arm will return to the 'off' position.

    Any ideas?

Also, this happened after I put a kinda stiff record on the tray. The hole in the middle was a bit tight, so I did need to use a bit of force (but nothing crazy) to get the record loaded.

Sorta unrelated - where should the weight on the end of the arm be set at?

    Thanks!

OK, set the tracking force to 1.5g
If it won't lower, something in the sequence of the mech. is wrong.
You may have to lift off the platter and take a look underneath.
Look for stray objects as well as bent or broken things.

Yes, the tracking force has been calibrated. I think you're right about something mechanical is off... Opening up the platter doesn't seem to offer much info - where should I be looking specifically? I don't really know how the arm is synched to the tray. How do I get into the guts of the arm mechanism?

    Thanks!
