Of course I read back a page or so, I have read the entire thread. My question was not about hardware and design, it was about functionality.
I would have said not having MasterLink and the functionality and flexibility that allows was about the most important differentiator, no? Interesting that the Encore won't

Read back a page or so - from the sounds of it, it'll have no real internal storage and no Master Link connection.
-
Wait, no MasterLink? So if I wanted one in the same room as my TV, I'd need to buy a second pair of speakers to hear anything out of it? Think I'm going to have to stick to BM5+BS5 and a Beo6. Any idea when the Beo6 is out?
I was told that the beosound 5 can work on its own scanning your network for a NAS/PC sharing its music files
Yep, definitely says that in this thread.
and will work on its own without the need for a BM5
Can't see anywhere it says this. If you have other info - would be good if the case
no beomaster five needed and it will cost more.
Who said that? Not particularly likely, since the BM5 basically IS the BS5. Without it, it's a blank screen. They can call it another name, or integrate it on more custom/embedded PC hardware so the two aren't separate (not likely to look pretty) - but
Slightly more than a BeoSound 5 (it has much more inside it so this is to be expected).
Like what? From the description we've been given on here, it has 2 extra USB ports. The rest is all software improvements.
Even though it's a "3D" panel, does that really mean they have to support 3D - my guess is, no.
Almost certainly no. With the active shutter technology Samsung adopted for 3D, there's no such thing as a "3D" panel. The TV electronics sync with the glasses to blank out left/right at

Can't see what use it would be? You're not going to get any data out of an 'old' device with Masterlink, so why bother with the hassle of converting it to Ethernet (which, incidentally, would not be technically very simple! You'd either need a PC or some more dedicated embedded system - e.g. MLGW).
-
And BV10, BV7-40 (Mk4 onward), BV7-55 - either for 'service use' or BDLive/firmware updates. So these could possibly be utilised in future - depending what hardware (if any) they're connected to.

It also means that the BS3, and not the Sky box, is doing the upscaling from SD (576) to 1080. Only downside is you end up with a downscaled then upscaled TV guide / Search & Scan on SD channels - which looks a bit ropey. But you watch TV for the content, not the EPG - right?
