Many features seem to be dependant on the standards (UPnP, AirPlay, DLNA, etc.) that B&O adopt and less so on their own ideal set of features and capabilities. I wonder if things like gapless playback are somehow dependant

To be honest, it's not worth picking this up unless you use the BeoSystem 1. The BeoVision 4 is just a monitor. The BeoSystem 1 has some limitations, primarily in connecting HD sources like Apple TV, but it's not that bad a unit. Similar to most other gear from 5-10 years ago.
