  • Re: BeoLab 9 - where is the midrange, too much tweeter!

Hi all! This post is interesting and wants some discussion and maybe measurement. I'm traveling right now and can't devote any time to this until Tuesday at the earliest. I will say, though, that when this speaker was being developed, we were very much concerned with midrange. Further, with my pair, I don't feel it's missing. I'll

  • Re: Is Digital to BL5 really much better than high-quality DAC to BL5?

[quote user="soundproof"] In my opinion, and Dave can correct me if I'm wrong, setting up BL5s properly requires consideration of at least the following: 1. Room geometry - with the ideal setup being symmetrical to walls and listening position. 2. Room properties - is the room lively or overly dampened. Do you need to do something to the

[quote user="Puncher"] Hi Dave - a question about the auto-calibration of the BL5 (just out of personal interest). I understand that the bass compensation is calculated from a measurement of the reverb time of the room, so that the amount of bass generated is modified to prevent an overly "boomy" response, is this correct? If so

  • Re: Is Digital to BL5 really much better than high-quality DAC to BL5?

[quote user="nmook"] I've done a lot of reading on the Beoworld Forums about this subject, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer. Since the Beolab 5 converts an audio signal to digital to do processing on it before playback, it seems that digital -> BL5 is the best approach. However, I have a very nice Benchmark HDR DAC I'd

  • Re: Listening room size & BL 5

[quote user="KingOfSnake"] In my view room size is an issue with Beolab 5's, they sound congested and do not perform in smaller environments (Beolab 9's are far superior in most setups where I have placed Beolab 5's). Many years ago I tried them in a 8m long room, 3m wide, they were very average. Twice I have collected Beolab 5's

  • Re: Listening room size & BL 5

Room size is simply not an issue with BeoLab 5s. During the design phase, we never even discussed the possibility of there being a "minimum" room size for the speaker. I've used them in a tiny office (2.5 m x 3.3 m) and in a cathedral (30 m x 60 m x 20 m). The ABC adapts the low-frequency part of the spectrum to whatever room they are

  • Re: Why have a pair of center speakers?

I've never used the Lexicon, so I can't speak to it. However, In my studio EVERYTHING except speakers is non-B&O. And yes, muting is an occasional nuisance on the BeoLab 3s being driven by a Yamaha mixing console. Fortunately, the lag is long enough that during almost all program material there is no muting, just when I stop playback for

  • Re: Why have a pair of center speakers?

Whoa! What a cool setup you propose! A single BL9 for a center with BL5s Left and Right will work extremely well for both film and music! I'd put the BL3s as side speakers. For 7.1, I'd buy a Lexicon processor with Logic 7, which is a really nice algorithm for deriving steering between side and rear from just the surround signal. The result

  • Re: Why have a pair of center speakers?

Good question! I can only speak to experience with the Avant (I have one set up with 4 BL3s and a BL2, normal home theatre). Answer: yes, I am troubled by interference effects of the stereo pair of the Avant. By "aiming" the Avant precisely, I can get the summation to be pretty good for ONE angle, but for other viewers off axis it deteriorates

  • Re: Why have a pair of center speakers?

Based on my experiments and study of surround sound, I would definitely argue against having two center speakers. The gain in power is only 3 dB, and the potential interference effects for the various listeners are substantial. The center channel is a very special channel for cinema, and needs to be treated with care. I hope this helps. Best regards
