When I turn on the television, radio or cd player the volume is set at 50, which is too loud. I can turn down the volume before turning off the TV but it always starts up at 50. Just to say the turntable worked for a while but I guess the preamp wasn't good quality enough as I got a humming from the speakers (?) and now the turntable is not rotating at a consistent speed again and making a scraping noise which I thought had gone away. Hi Peter, Just to say thanks for your input. I now have the preamp which work fine. Your memory served you correctly and there are indeed two holes labeled 33 and 45 on the underside of the 5500. Looks like they take a Phillips screw driver, so I'll give that a go.
