Try plugging your speakers into the speaker 2 sockets. If there is sound to these then it will be the mute relay which is kaputterated. Chris.

It's been a while since I have done the set down adjustment but there is cam inside which you turn (very little) to adjust the set down. I think there are actually 2 of these - 1 for 12" & the other for 7" singles if memory serves me. I've added a pic from the service manual below. As for the arm sliding across the record :- 1

This may sound silly but are you 100% sure you are plugging the turntable into the correct socket? There are numerous inputs on the BM5000 & it is easy to get it wrong - it has happened many times before to Beoworld members. I use form 2's with my PC & really rate them for this type of application. Very lightweight & you can wear them for hours without even noticing. I personally prefer them to A8's because I really don't like anything stuck in my ears & find them really annoying very quickly. Not good for anyone with a fat head though... Chris.
The way I see it is the only one in the world I can find new.
Er.... looks like this seller was a little economical with the truth with his claims to have sold you the ONLY NEW ONE IN THE WORLD . I wouldn't be surprised if he has a few of these things waiting to be listed.
