does the new analog to digital stuff make a difference if i play movies on the computer and hook it up to the television?

I have a great MX5000 that I am crazy about, but part of me is being convinced to upgrade to something with HDMI connection so I can view movie downloads on a TV. I don't want to give in! Is there any sort of cable or anything that I can use to connect my laptop or macbook to the MX5000? Thanks in advance.

I have an old MX5000 which I am very happy with. It is an amazing TV and I'm not interested in upgrading to something flashier or more expensive. I have a MACbook and I would love to connect it to the TV, but perhaps the TV is too old - I think I got it in 1993. I'm not the most tech-savvy person in the world, so if replies could be dumbed down
