Keeping it under wraps isnt necessarily a good thing, since it encourages people to hold-out until it arrives... meaning that I for one, wont be buying anything until it does arrive... kinda thing

Agreed. There's no point in speculating about it when really there is no useful information available about it. B&O have done a good job keeping it under wraps which IMO is a good thing - helps build up hype around the product...

Let's just wait and see guys. Who knows. Speculate when we have something to speculate about. At the moment, we don't even have a release date..

How do you know that Alex,have you seen it already?

My dealer just back from the US dealer meeting confirms only one Beosound 5 can be connected to a Beomaster 5. Store samples in Nov? customer units after the first of the year sometime.

I can hardly believe that they mess this up. I can the that the syncing works the way as described. I use my ipod that way actually, I din't want the movies to sync so I just drag the entire music section of the library onto the ipod and it is smart enough just to copy what is missing.

Apple lossless I would think they can easily add I would think but that is definitely a mistake.

&Trip you said at some point not to worry about a 2 way remote. Giving that nobody talks about it I do start now. The BS5 can be as "sexy" as it wants. If it ain't sitting on my lap I am not buying it.

Using a BeoMaster 5 without a BeoSound 5 is like saying, "Hey, the DVD 1 plays CDs so I can skip the BeoSound 9000."

It is quite simply the most compelling product we've made since the BeoLab 5s. You will want one. Badly.

I want one right now. Very badly.

(P.S. Oddly, predictions are getting "colder" as we approach launch. And, unfortunately, there is absolutley no way of using BeoMedia 1 in any way with the BeoSound 5.)

Don't forget about Flac and 24bit/196khz support too or it will just become another lame pedestrian hard disk player.

Thanks Ignace for posting the Beoconnect procedures for BS5/BM5.

I really didn't see much that was new because this is basically how it works for Beomedia 1.

Surely there is more to it than this. However the compelling design of the Beosound 5 will be the real test of whether it is worth 5000 Euros.

I am really hopeing that B&O will ultimately support Apple lossless. I have a 2 terabyte disk on which I am putting my entire CD collection and some LPs also.

I guess we'll have to wait to see what happens.

The details given in the posted document to me offer up some insight that is both very good and very bad. Now, what we don't have are more details like this on the operation of the BS5, but what I'm seeing here gives a lot of information in a few short pages:

- Transfer of content from iTunes is not synchronized, it is simple drag and drop. That's less than ideal. For one thing, you're duplicating content on 2 different systems. It's a waste of space, but I know that many folks won't really mind that. That being said, it also means that you have to do more work if you use both the BM5 and iTunes. You can't simply create new playlists, import content, etc in iTunes and have it all seamlessly sync to the BM5. This sounds ridiculous given the drag and drop ability, but really there should be a sync option. Other systems do it either via sync or simply stream from iTunes and thus offer access to all created playlists and imported content (minus the DRM stuff, of course). True integration should let the user do the work on one system and then have to do little else to access that from another.

- I'm not familiar with the "coloured list" functionality, but its arbitrary limit of 99 tracks seems silly. That may have to do with backwards compatibility for older B&O components, but still it's silly. One of the benefits of digital should be to overcome stuff like this, especially on a system with a 500GB HDD.

- The lack of ALAC (Apple Lossless) support is really unforgivable. With a large system HDD and the fact that it is designed to be connected to quality audio systems, they should welcome higher quality music files. It's not like they were going the WMA route and ignoring Apple altogether here. They have a Mac version of the software that is built for easy iTunes transfers as well as supporting the AAC and m4a formats. Leaving out ALAC is just plain silly. And oh by the way, non Apple products can and do support ALAC playback, so it's not a licensing problem.

This is kind of the reverse way that I usually dig into a product, but it does highlight limitations of the system before ever seeing the BS5. While I have a feeling that the BS5 will still impress, these issues are problematic. However, they are software dependent and as such, can be fixed if B&O did so choose.
