I have a Beogram 5005 with a new SMMC4 cartridge, a TX 2 (spare), for my few hundred albums, also a beocord 5000 just to complete the stack!

I think that once the amps are restored in the Pentas, I'll be OK for power! I plan to run the Pentas at line level (using RCA's) with fairly long cable runs, so naturally I'll have to build an outboard tube based buffer amp for the 5000's preamp outputs (just gotta have tubes in there somewhere!), and run cables for the Penta displays with a simple interface.

Kyle

update: I figured out how to post my swag list!

Re: Beomaster 5000 (1985) restore - Worth it?

Søren Hammer:

Congratulations Kyle!

Welcome to the forum, you've really caught the Beovirus!

If you are happy about the sound of the 5000, you really should try a Beomaster 8000 or a 4400. The amplifier designs are similar, but more powerful and (in the 8000) much more headroom because of the giant power supply

B&O tangential tracking record decks are also high quality units that you really should have a look at

I feel sorry for you Kyle, after restoring your Pentas and hearing them together with the rest of your Beo, you will be lost and highly infected with the BeoVirus, if you still have a pair of vinyl records, the next step is a BG, and from there who knows, but as you have Pentas, I think you will be thinking about Beomaster tuner/Beolab amp. 5000, and after connecting the Pentas, you will have to get a pair of Beolab 5000 panel speakers, just to compare.

There is no way back, you are lost. Now as you have been surfing for a year, you know we love pics.

And yes very welcome to the forum

Re: Beomaster 5000 (1985) restore - Worth it?

Congratulations Kyle!

I got the B&O bug about two years ago when I bought a CD 50 for $10. After finally figuring out how to play a disk (upside down), I was very surprised to hear the most musical noises coming from a CD that I had ever heard. The closest to vinyl in my experience. I put away my fancy SACD player and haven't dug it out again.

Naturally I was interested enough to build up a beosystem 5000 stack, with a spare beomaster 5000 that "needed work" as they say. The work involved replacing the front panel cable with very flexible ribbon cable, and the normal bias adjustments. I was Pretty happy with the sound of the system when compared to my crazy herd of tube gear (DIY and Vintage). Not quite there - but close.

Then I installed a capacitor kit from Dillen (Martin). What a stunning difference in quality. Mainly in the tiny low level details. Many things I hadn't noticed before in music that I know well. I'm very happy with the kit and instructions Martin provided. It was nice to have an original for comparison, and - no comparison.

So is it worth the trouble to rebuild? You bet!

Now for a kit from Martin to rebuild the Penta 1's I got a week ago! Then the CD 50. Where does it end?
