I've seen many different substitutes, fishing line etc. but there's really
nothing like working with real dial string.
It's still available from many suppliers and it's not particularly costly.
Get a 3 meter piece or so (if you can buy as little as that) and you will
have enough to allow for eventual mistakes.

The length will be corrected to the actual need when you tie the knots
at the spring and cut off the excess length.

Thanks for the tips Martin. One more problem I'm afraid!!

The Tuning string has obviously gotten old and when I tried to thread it back it kept breaking, so now I have a whole lot of broken pieces of string!! I'm not sure what the best subsitute would but I guess I could find something. Only problem is how long should the string be?? Does it matter if its a bit shorter or longer?

I remember doing one of these a couple of years ago and I had it all put nicely together
only to find out I had the tuning wheel rotating in the wrong direction.

Direction of string travel is worth noting as the first thing.
Then, when you have the path worked out, work in small steps, using
pieces of masking tape or similar to hold the string in position in strategic places.
The manual will tell you to fit the spring (tension) as the last thing but I've found
that to be very difficult at times. I like to mount the whole thing, also the spring with its
tied knots, before adding tension, actually I often start with the spring because it provides a good hold of
the end of the string. I then choose one or two of the smaller dial wheels and deliberately feed
the string below the wheels, so that it runs on the brass stand or spindle. Then, when the
whole thing is ready and set, I lift the string up to the wheels, helping the spring a little with
a small screwdriver or similar to allow it to shed some string length from the capacitor pulley.
Using this trick on one, two or sometimes three little wheels will add the tension needed.

BM 6000 Quad tuning string!

The tuning string on my Bm 6000 Quad snapped. I opened the Bm but am unable to find how the string goes......it must the most complicated string system I have ever seen! I've been battling for over an hour with no luck. Seriously, was it necessary to make it so complicated!! Driving me insane....so is anyone able to tell me how the string goes back?? Otherwise I'm going to put all back together and not use the big dial which is a pity but I will go insane if I spend another minute on it!!
