I will have to try and fix mine I think as it is not working too well!

Where do you buy all the replacement capacitors ( I realise you are in Germany so your local shop would not be much use to me!) - is there an online site?

Update: This is the way capacitors look like after 15-20 years.

These are pictures of a running VX5000. The VX was stored around 12 years, no board looked defect, no cap looked bad. The VX was then in use again for 2 days, around 16 hours. It worked almost perfect, picture and sound were really good. Besides that, it had a bad smell and became hot. Today the sound dropped and there were distortions in the picture...

This is why i always recommend to replace them all. It makes no sense to look for a defect one, they are all defect, sooner or later.

The VX is just a example, the same problem can be found in a lot of Hifi and TV hardware of the 80's and 90's. Surprisingly these hardware can still work for a while [:'(]

Yes, it is possible to reduce the heat.

1.) All capacitors with a defect need more and more power... so more or less all of them need replacement after 15-20 years.

2.) B&O used the big standard capacitors. There is a fan inside, pulling air through the boards. This is pretty difficult, there are so many wires and boards inside, there is not enough spce inside the VX series.

I use the very small micro miniatur capacitors on the two mainbords an on the capstan motor. especially the SMD capacitors become very hot because the steel plate below the board is used as a heat sink... after playing 2-3 hours the motor is around 60-70 degrees hot. Using miniature capacitors with standard wires will keep them cooler.

Especially if you replace all standard capacitors on the upper mainboard by micro miniatur capacitors will keep the VX much cooler, around 5-10 degrees less. After playing several hours the top cover becomes only warm, not hot any more. So replace every 1 - 47uf capacitor by an 105 degree micro type. They also last longer ;)

Hello Martin,

You were right. Two of the capacitors on the capstanmotor are leaking. Also at least 5 other capacitors on the other boards.

I'll try to replace them, althought these on the capstanmotor will require a very small solderingiron and a lost of skill....

Just assuming I can fix it, is there a way to reduce the heat in the VX?

Hi Joost,

more or less ALL capacitors on these VX5000/5500/7000 need replacement, they are all damaged. If you rember the fotos in the old forum, around 200 of them have to be replaced after 20 years.

But if the VX has still a picture and sound, then replace the 3-4 SMD capacitors on the capstan motor. If there are black spots around the capacitors, they have lost electrolyt... clean it carefully with water and alkohol. Capstan Motor and the board are one part, can't be disassembled, only the axle has to be removed for cleaning. The SMD parts can easily be removed, just turn them with a plyer, they break off easily without damage of the board.

If the SMD chip on the capstan Motor still becomes hot, then it's to late... burned. But usually it's 50/50 for a second life...

VX 5000 burned?

Hello,

I'm trying to revive an old VX 5000. The 'thing' ate my tape, but doesn't want to return it, neither wants to play or FF it. I've read that 'burned' capacitators are common with the VX 5000.

Does anybody has a clue where in the VX I can find the most probably guilty capacitors? No service manual on Beoworld and the interior of the VX is a gigantic mess!
