I just the woofers from My RL 140's to be repaired. The place I sent to are known to be very good only thing is they are replacing the surrounds with foam. They say the only replace things to original specifications. They said it would make a slight difference if one were to put rubber surrounds.

The 5 ohms measured as DC resistance would be about right, the rest is far out. Have you measured in-circuit or out ?

Also note that speaker impedance (AC resistance) is different from the DC resistance your multimeter will give you (and greatly frequency dependent).

1 is 5 ohm and the other is like 14 ohm. weird but thats what mine read.

Thanks for the speedy response Martin. I pulled the back of the defective unit and it is gone. I did find a set of foam repair kits on eBay. Sorted. How much are your cap kits..? Think it is a good time to repair the lot at once.

I don't sell refoam kits, only the cap kits but
I'm sure your high-end speaker repair-shop will have all the parts needed, probable even audiophile caps.

Hi Martin,

I am also getting a little distortion from one of my redlines. Think the foam must have gone.

Can you let me know cost of kits..? I will then send in to a high end speaker repair man to complete the repair. They have not been worked on for some time so think the capacitor set would also be a good plan, so please send me the costs on these also.

Generally, it will brighten up the sound, bringing it back to where it was originally when the filter capacitors were still fresh. Not all redline speakers capacitors are bad, still many owners become positively surprised after a re-cap.

The original drivers are 6 ohms, practically impossible to replace with anything else.

Worth repairing the original drivers but tolerances are extremely tight in this type of driver so I wouldn't recommend you try your luck on these if you never did anything like this before.

Also worth replacing the old and dried out capacitors in the crossovers while in there. A kit is available.

Without wishing to stir up a hornets nest, I am looking for some sound advice!

My RL 140's are both suffering with foam rot, the drivers are ITT brand. Should I attempt repair

(never done this before) or just get new drivers?
