Opened up the BC1900, cleaned out the 30 years of dust, and cleaned the tape path. Most everything looked to be in pretty good shape, so I put her back together without doing anything else. I tried six or seven tapes and they all played. And she sounds great.

I had enough spare computer parts sitting in boxes in the garage to slap a Windows 7 system together, so I did. I didn't have a proper monitor, but I had a 6" television also out in the garage. I mounted that behind a picture frame and stuck it up on the wall. I did need to buy a networking cable and a keyboard and mouse, though. I still need an optical drive, thus the hole in the front of the new PC.

I also had a selector switch lieing in a box, so screwed that into the side of the Beo stand.

A. Well, I went out to the garage this morning to start the fix. Took a cassette of Lenny Kravitz's Greatest Hits with me. As I noted before, fast forward and rewind worked, but play did not. I was going to try to document the behavior of the deck before I took it apart. I put the Lenny tape in and rewinded it. No problem.

Then pressed play. And it worked. And sounded great. For the whole first side.

Q. That's strange. Deck looks nice, too.

A. Yeah, spent five minutes on it with a Goof Off sheet.
