From one moment to another they can shut down your TV. Sometimes you can simply switch the TV back on again, after which the TV will shut down again, but this can take a while, sometimes even weeks! And you will not see any problem in the picture. To check the tube you can adjust the contrast to maximum and look at some very light pictures. This will make your tube work harder.
