I have restored more BM8000s than anything else!!

In the first fault the tuner appeared stuck at 87.5MHz. However, in manual tuning mode if you span the tuner dial the tuning would suddenly start to increase but you could not control it and it would just race up to 108MHz. You could briefly hear each channel as it passed through. It became obvious the fault was on the CPU board and after removing the shielding (what a pain of a job if it's the fully soldered type ) the scope showed that there was no output from the U264B.

The second was quite different. In manual tuning mode you could set the tuning digits by turning the tuning dial but there was nothing but static. The scope showed no FM UP or DOWN so again I opened the CPU board but this time the U264B was outputting something. I changed the 6500 slave for a good spare but this made no difference and when I looked more carefully as the scope output from the U264B it did not look like the first looked after the repair. I managed to find a spare in Germany (his last) and hey presto it worked

I gather that the usual fault in the BM6000 is the display of an out of range frequency and no tuning. The way the fault manifests itself is probably down the how the firmware interprets the rubbish that the U264B is outputting...

Regards
Richard

Re: Beomaster 8000 FM tuner performance..........

Looks like BM8000 tuner is a hidden gem, virtually no one talks about BM8000 tuner as regards its performance, I only managed to find one who did say it could find stations clearly even without an antenna, the ones yamaha tuner couldn't find even with antenna.

Frequency response-wise, it outshines 3001 tandberg tuners by a wide margin, the one regarded by tunerphiles as the best tuner out there.

Since it's a receiver, amp, and tuner combined, this wouldn't be really a bad deal if one can find that's working and fair price.

I never replaced one single prescaler in a BM8000
What were the symptoms, the same as in the BM6000 ?

However, I have now restored 8 BM8000, and I had tuner issues on two of these.

In both cases it was a faulty prescaler chip on the CPU board which is essentially part of the tuner circuit. Maybe I was just unlucky...

Re: Beomaster 8000 FM tuner performance..........

I haven't got a lot of experience when it comes to Tandberg or other tuners
so cannot really compare.
You can buy more complex and fancy built tuners but I doubt you will find
one more stabile and generally well performing.
BM8000's pull in lots of stations here even without an antenna.

Sound is clear and bright and I hardly ever see an electronic fault related
to the tuner.
Definitely one of the best tuners from B&O.

How would it stack against other tuners, especially tandberg or eumig tuners?
