Curiousity is what drives me too, I suppose.

I have looked into this problem for a long time and I know why the LED's fail.
It's a long story but basically, over time, it will most likely happen to each and every segment.
Vibrations make things worse and that's probably why the displays in the Beocord
models seems to be the first ones to show failure, presumably because of the bangs
from the large solenoids that engage the mechanical functions.
F.e. the unavoidable vibrations related to replacing a defective original
display with a functional original one taken from another machine will probably introduce (more) failures in both displays.
The original displays are sealed from the factory and that's how I prefer to receive them.
If you opened yours, send it anyways and I will take a look at it.
The rebuilt displays will also be sealed but will be practically unbreakable when it comes to vibrations.

this sounds great!

not to get too technical, but are the issues (whatever they were) that led to the failure of the displays addressed w/ you kits as well? (i.e) is the issue similar to foam-rot and simply happens over time, or were you able to correct some underlying condition as well?

just curious...

Thanks for the positive feedback, Nick, it means a lot coming from a guy like you !

There is a specific kit for each model. Or at least there will be. The number of different machine versions and also different models of displays are almost endless.
So far, I have kits ready for Beocord 6000,6002,8000,8002,8004,9000 and Beomaster 6000,8000

The rebuild service works on core exchange basis, meaning that I will need to have the defective display(s) sent to me and you will receive a rebuilt display of the same type (or the actual same display rebuilt), together with a handful of components for you to replace to convert the machine for use with the rebuilt displays.
Detailed instructions are included with the kits. Basic soldering skills and tools are required to replace the components and displays.

In the Beomasters 6000 & 8000, the displays will have to be done in pairs because of the way they are electronically controlled.
For the Beocord's, dedicated kits are also available for the VU level meter display.

Missing LED segments seems to be more and more common but since this solution is still fairly new, kits for the Beocenter 5000,7000,7002,7007,7700 are still in the making, some actually soak testing as I write this, hopefully ready soon.

i too have the issue w/ several pieces of that era.

@martin: is the kit just for the 6000, or will it also work w/ bc700x-7700, bm8000, etc...?

I've been restoring a 6000 system,but needed to do something about missing display segments.I contacted Martin (Dillen)for help,and not surprisingly,found he was developing a solution!

In due course,I received a repair kit comprising of replacement displays and various resistors,and nice clear directions as to the work required.

It needs patience and soldering skill,and also care refitting the plastic former that supports the function and volume displays.It's well worth the effort,as the displays are easily as good as the originals.
