I will diassasemble the speed change as best I can and try to spot the problem. There does not seem to be any movement in the fine speed control which I believe is the black knurled knob in the centre of the control.

Glad to be of help. The fine speed control runs from the little black knob down a shaft that is inside a sleeve - the shaft can seize. Let some penetrating oil soak in - PlusGas Formula A Dismantling Lubricant is what I used, its clear and doesn't muck things up. Don't try to force the little black knob, or the bit inside that grips the D section on top of the shaft can split and it's a b****r to mend!

I will scan the other manual then as it is the earlier model - Type 5202/5203 and 5212. I'll get it on today. Not sure it offers much more but it might help.

Sounds like you're dealing with the older "round motor" Beogram, the one with the chrome badge on the front. The later model with the rectangular motor like the Beogram 1001 is the one covered by the manual on site. Although the motors and their fine speed adjustment are quite different the mechanisms for changing speed from 33 to 45 to 78 are pretty much the same. If this is the area at fault (seems like it) then the manual on site is just as good - or bad, in this case.

The big chrome knob on top turns a white nylon(?) tube that carries a lifting cam at the base. This cam engages half way along a lever and and either raises it or lowers it - causing the wheel that picks up the drive off the motor to rise or fall. This wheel has to slide up and down its axle - it engages the belt pulley that carries the turntable drive belt with a pin. The wheel picks up the motor drive via a brass stepped gear pulley that looks a bit like a cone. The only adjustment possible is the position of the gear pulley - it's held in position by a locking screw.

There are some invisible subtleties to this arrangement - the turntable needs to be more or less horizontal so that gravity can pull the motor assembly down against the suspension springs (otherwise things aren't quite correctly placed) and the turntable belt needs to have good tension (otherwise the wheel won't press hard enough against the gear pulley until enough turns have taken place to pull all of the slack out.) If the turntable belt has too much tension then turning the big chrome knob (in the correct direction!) won't swing the wheel away from the gear pulley and the wheel won't be able to slide up and down.

There's plenty of scope for parts to sieze up - unfortunately it isn't immediately obvious that they aren't supposed to be stuck together. (The fine speed adjustment is particularly vulnerable here.) Getting that lever correctly positioned is awkward, the "hinge" is well wierd. The assembly is held together by bolts that defy access with spanners. In all, it's quite simple but fiendishly awkward to work on if you have big fingers.

I do actually have another Beogram 1000 manual but having looked through it, it is no better than the one on site I am afraid. The service manuals are pretty variable in helpfulness and I agree this one is not so great. Maybe Martin can help with some advice.

BEOGRAM 1000 SPEED CHANGE PROBLEM

The deck starts slowly and runs at a single speed only but when the speed change control is increased the platter stops.

The cam operating the drive raises the wheel but jams against the top of the motor shaft and stalls the motor.

The Beogram 1000 manual on this site does not cover the problem area and the second manual is misfiled and applies to an irrelevant (later) model.

Can the speed control system be adjusted, please? Is there a comprehensive service manual available?
