Well, I might get to hear it in action this Xmas, so I can make a judgement then. Cartridge wear seems unlikely if it's had light use, I'd have thought. Maybe my sister's ears are too sensitive ;-)

Hard to say without hearing it 1st hand Colin.

It could be the cartridge simply has a build up of fluff on it! Or the cartridge is worn or tracking weight set incorrectly - or as you mentioned, the LP's themselves.

My sister tells me she's remembered one of the reasons she's not using the Beogram 9500 is that she experienced quite a lot of hiss and crackle with it when playing her LPs. She doesn't think this s down to usage, as it didn't get that much usage (and she moved onto an B&O CD/tape unit thereafter. The Ouverture I think).

Has anybody else experienced this? Sadly, in one respect, it may not matter, as my mother's hearing (she's getting the Beogram) is not the best, so she may not notice! Seems weird if it's had fairly low usage though. I suppose it could be the LPs of course.

Or snapping then off as I did, when I gave my BG9000 to my Parents to use with their Beocenter 4000.

I just saw the reply you gave to a guy asking about connecting a Beogram 3300 (some while back) to a non B&W amp (i.e. DIN to phono). You suggested he might only be able to source a 5-pin DIN to phono adapter, e.g. from Maplins, and that he'd have to remove pins 1 and 7 from the Beogram's connector cable.

Wish I'd known that trick, as I sourced a 7-pin DIN to phono adapter cable from FlashbackSales, at £20. It's a nice cable, though, very solidly put together, and with gold-plated connectors. There is a guy on eBay (Ireland) sells the 7-pin adapter cables as well (maybe you know about him?), but I didn't really want to tangle with eBay. Reading some of the comments here in the 'eBay' section just confirms that you need to be very careful not to get ripped off on there!

Still, I could have saved myself some cash going the 5-pin DIN route, as Maplins sell them for only £8. I should have got on here earlier!

Used to be my nickname at school, because the kids heard my surname as 'Goodyear', rather than Goodier :-)))

Yes, the adapter cable has an earth. That goes to the 'ground' connection on the amp does it? Is that to stop 'hum', or something else?

That will be fine. Remember that you need an earth from the metal casing of the DIN plug.

Thanks Graham. I wondered if the B&W amps might be a tad more sensitive than other amps. Thinking about it, my brother might have thought that my amp is more recent than it is, as I've been reading that newer amps don't have a phono pre-amp, as it's not expected that people will have turntables. However, I got my amp in the era when turntables were still the norm, so it is designed to take input from a turntable. Hopefully that means it's got a built-in pre-amp, although there's no mention of that in the manual. However, it does have dedicated 'phono' inputs at the back for a turntable (plus a 'ground' connection). So hopefully it will pan out ok.

Assuming you are talking about connecting to the phono input of an itegrated pre amp/amp combination then you should have no problem. The output from B&O cartridges is marginally lower than other moving magnet devices but should only require 1 click extra on the volume control.

Hi,

My sister is donating her BeoGram 9500 turntable to my mother, and I'm donating my hifi amp, as my sister still requires her B&O amp. I've sorted out an adapter to connect the BeoGram 9500's 7-pin DIN connector to the amp's phono inputs. However my brother, who has an old B&O machine himself, has suggested there may be a problem because the non-B&W amp may not be sensitive enough to pick up the low signal from the 9500's pickup arm.

Can somebody tell me if this is the case, and is there a workaround for it?
