SHARP! Yes, that's who made it. It wasn't that model, but you've helped me track it down.

Plasticky, but fairly good looking. It was rarely used and didn't sound half bad if I recall correctly. I'll have to ask her if she still has it. I used to live with them, and we used this turntable in place of my Beogram RX as there was no space for it. I remember being put off at first, but it sounded good too so I didn't mind. :)

I too have a Beogram 5000 (replaced an also-underrated RX), and love it immensely!
I'm curious about the tangential decks, but don't ever see myself bothering to swtich to one with the 5000 serving me so well.

Speaking of tangential players, my brothers wife used to have this incredibly odd upright turntable. It had two tangential arms suspended from the top and thus could play both sides of a record without flipping. It was made by a fairly commonplace brand, but I can't for the life of me find any information on it. Any ideas?

Crikey Olly - that's some memory you have.

I know the episode of which you speak, the culprit used the tonearm to knock over a marker pen to set off a domino effect & drop a heavy book on the floor to replicate the sound of a falling body. Along with setting off a squib momentarily earlier in the fireplace to sound like a gunshot......... er................. I think I need to get out more often.........

I am interested to know how the 5000 excels the 5005 by way of audio quality..? I might have to borrow the 3000 off my mum to compare with my 5000 now!

Many years ago (around my introduction B&O days in the late 1980's) I had a Kenwood stacking system with a tangential tracking deck with remote control track search facility. It had a quite high success rate at finding tracks but suffered with the same problems as all of the B&O ones in selecting a quiet period in a track. Not good when trying to skip through a Pink Floyd album.

It was actually a really good system (with the ill fated digital cassette tape deck) & still going strong AFAIK with my nephew who I gave it to. I know I paid a hefty price for it at the time of purchase - about half of what I paid for the Beocenter 9500 which replaced it 6 months later.

Except... I switched back to the 5000!

Making the radial arm remote controlled wouldn't have been too hard, so I wonder why it never happened. I agree it is a totally useless feature, but very much B&O-like! It would've been different if it had actually detected the tracks - that would be a relatively easy task today, but perhaps not back then.

The Beogram 5000 is a much under rated deck - most people swapped to the Beogram 5005 - me included - and although the convenience of remote control over the arm is quite fun, the sound quality of the 5000 is in my opinion better. One also tends to listen to the entire side as recorded anyway so the initial thoughts of more control are probably mostly an illusion.

Yes it can.

The Beomaster 5500 will control any of the 5000 components (CD50, BC5000) & vise versa the Beomaster 5000 can control the 5500 components.

The only problem lies with interchanging the remote controls :- ie. the Beomaster 5000 cannot be controlled with any remote which is compatible with the Beomaster 5500 & again vice versa applies. This is because, although the datalink codes are identical for both systems the remote control codes differ.
