I recently had the same problem except more so. The plastic was broken AND the contacts were missing. Shame really as the rest of the deck is mint.

I found that getting the insert out of the arm was not possible although I did not try too hard as too much was missing.

I modified a scrap arm from a late model 4002 which works fine but is not quite the genuine article. The 4002 had butchered itself in transit. I managed to save the arm for this job. It's not quite right, wrong colour and different fixing. They are sort of interchangeable!

It will do a job until I can find a genuine 4000 arm.

Moving swiftly-got the plastic off the cartridge, glued it in place, but as I tried to play a record no sound. I do fear that my attempts to place the cartridge in have damaged the film and the signal isnt being transferred...however, if it helps, when one puts ear close to the record i can hear the very low sound of the music playing from it.

As for the pics-was from an iphone, gets the job done immediately-i now use a cybershot with hundreds of thousands of megapixels like they do them now! :)

That pic doesn't look quite right to me - more light required and you see where your finger prints are in focus, that is how far away the back of the cartridge should be from your lens!!! Make sure your camera is in macro mode and as above loads of light!

As Jaques says it could be inside the deck, or it could be lost :(

You know I miss my old Coolpix 8700 for close pics like this.. A pig to use but the macro was superb - better than my Canon SLR with a fair (sigma 1770) lens and macro added as an afterthought - although a dedicated macro lens would be far superior to either!

Cheers Jacques, I did manage to get it out of the cartridge. I honestly did not remember that being there-but as i said earlier, the cartridge was replaced late 80s and wasnt really used after that due to the intro of cds. My guess is that this was stuck due to lack of use all these years and/or perhaps broke during some transport. Will try now to glue and let you know of result

Have you had a look inside the deck?

That would include underneath the switch panel!

Your pictures are too big that's all (at least for my meagre 512k): you'll have to lower resolution a bit then...

ok, see what you mean-I cant really remember as this is only the second cartridge that replaced the original SP15. This is an MMC 20EN-this i can tell you, I did not do this. It is either like this in my model, or it stuck in there sometime during the 80's. However, let me show you the back of the original SP15. Do you have a beogram 4000? How on earth am I supposed to dislodge that piece of plastic from the cartridge????

Wow, you actually glued it back then... congrats!

Maybe your plastic is indeed stuck inside the cartridge!

Look inside the cartridge to make sure the piece of plastic is not stuck inside! It is gluable, I did mine, but you will be reluctant to want to change cartridges in the future!

I am not sure how easy it would be to remove from a tone arm if you want to replace. I doubt you would get anything but a complete assembly tbh!

Oh dear, you actually broke the plastic! Panic!

You'll need a new insert. I'm sure someone here will be able to find one for you. Definitely fixable because you can solder.

Thanks fo response, the diamond shaped part is ok. It is the film that is bending in the effort to unsert the stylus. i see that to upload a pic i must used a 3rd party website, will do but pics arent as clear to help. what do you suggest for repair?

The strip of plastic that holds the contacts (and inserts into the cartridge body) is mean't to be bent at I would guess about 30 degrees. If that is the case slide the cartridge in at it's natural angle. If it is broken it will be loose and able to bend. Not an easy permenant repair but possible!

There is also a grounding spring that inserts into the lower part of the cartridge, a diamond shaped piece of wire. Make sure this is not bent or squashed into the arm.

Thanks for replies-have done it, checked it, and it worked. Am now devastated though as I removed the stylus to brush it carefuly and it will not reinsert. It appears that the tape (if the word is correct) that slides in the stylus on the top part is damaged and now bent, and I cannot reinsert the stylus. I am suspecting that there is no workaround for this? please let me know if you have any idea.
