I would try at 1.7g and then tune by ear. It will not damage the records - more damage is done by a mistracking cartridge. I have a couple with Shibata tips done by Axel and an original MMC5000. Axel's are very easy to listen to and musical. They do seem to perform best with slightly more weight than the originals.

Shibata stylus pressure?

Can anyone tell me which is the optimal pressure for a Shibata stylus?

I just received my MMC2 from rufurbishing at Axel. I chose the best available option with Shibata stylus, since the price gap was quite reasonable. I was though surprised that Axel suggests a pressure of 1,7 g for it. Seems high concidering the manual of my Beogram 5500 recommends a pressure at 1,0 for MMC2, but maybe that recommendation goes solely for elliptical stylus. Axel says Shibata stylus needs higher pressure to perform its best. I never had a Shibata before. Anyone who has experience of which pressure that sounds best in this case? Can 1,7 g in some way damage the records or the stylus?
