I agree - a SMMC20CL would be fine though! I have used 20CLs for quad records - I have a BM6000 and a 3400 - the 3400 is actually the better sounding in my view though the 6000 has it in the looks department - just a shame that the soundsmith cartridges are black and not silver. I have a SMMC20EN which sounds better than any of my MMC20CLs for stereo reproduction. The SMMC2 uses the other fitting so wouldn't do what you want.

The MMC6000 is not a concern, I had one of them (bought new), and the rubber suspension disintegrated, so today I would stay away from them completely.

I don't think we have anything to worry about regarding suitable cartridge availability......

Here's what I asked Peter Ledermann at Soundsmith:

How would the SMMC2 affect the playback of my precious and rare CD-4 records with the BG6000 with the CD-4 frequency response requirement up to 40,000Hz?

My receiver is the quad BM3400, which can process 4 channel signals.

And here's his reply

Best thing to do if you need CD4 (4 channel sound) on a BG6000 is to get one of our SMMC20CL+ cartridges. They will go out to 50Khz.

That is a shame. These are quite rare - took me quite some time to find one myself but they do come up.The problem is the cartridge as MMC6000s are few and far between in good condition.

I bid on this, and it turned out to be a case of Shill Bidding. The Seller's bidder pushed me way up, and then minutes before the end, cancelled his high bid, and bid in GBP10.00 under me, so I would win at a stupid price. I told the seller to go to hell at that price, and reported him to ebay.

Wait, we're not finished - he then comes back to me, tells me he gave a second chance to the "Shill Bidder", is waiting for payment, and then hints that he'd like to negotiate for a price around the last legal bid - GBP67.00!!!!

He got an appropriate reply from me.

I'm just waiting for him to leave me Negative Feedback for non-payment!

Watch out for him - selsdonboy0 - there are some real criminals out there.

I'm still looking for a BG6000 Quad, should be in good cosmetic condition, with all parts present and accounted for. Mechanically and electronically, I always do a complete rebuild and restoration to better-than-new condition, so it doesn't need to be 100% perfect in those areas.

For those interested, a Beogram 6000 quad on Ebay! Remember this will play perfectly in stereo but has a built in RIAA so will work with all the newer equipment. Not remote control - but you have to clean the LP anyway!!
