Agree with Graham - very impressed - am actually getting a friend to review them - he is a more recognised reviewer! I too had a MMC2 repaired but also a couple of MMC20 cartridges. Am arranging a comparison between a Soundsmith cartridge and one of Axel's.

I've just had the re-built MMC2 in the deck and it sounds fine. More open and detailed than the MMC4 which is to be expected.

An excellent job by Axel.

Received MMC2 and MMC4 back from Axel today. MMC4 playing Brothers In Arms in a BG6500 as I type this. Most impressive so far and Axel's service is second to none!

I asked for the two cartridges to be repaired to as near as possible to the original spec. The MMC4 has new suspension, new aluminium cantilever and new elliptical diamond. Sounds fine to me, very much like the SMMC4. Smoother than the original if my ears are to be trusted.

I will test the MMC2 later. This has had a nude line stylus, sapphire cantilever and new suspension.

I'm sure Peter will do a much more scientific review. He will use longer words as well!!

The SMMC4 from Sound-smith is somewhat smoother than the original B&O manufactured units and they still charge $149 plus delivery and taxes. In the UK my last SMMC4's cost me £160 each with delivery and import duty and the p1ss poor exchange rate (about 3 months ago) and I bought 4.

Re-tipping is considerably cheaper but at the time of writing I am just waiting for my first units back from Axel so have not had chance to test them as yet. Should be any day now. Peter is a couple of weeks ahead of me and is doing a proper evaluation of a number of retipped designs.

On second look, I have a MMC4 not a MMC1, and I saw the weight is supposed to be 1.2gr. It was set at it's highest when I recieved it at 1.8, but I doubt that was the problem. I adjusted the slide you mentioned (thanks again) and it does still sound like static crap, and the stylus just skates along the album to the last track within five seconds, some music is heard but not really. Maybe I should send it in. Re-tipping or new stylus? What do you recommend.

The TX2 is a tangential model and so has no antiskating adjustments, leave the two plastic screws alone!

The MMC1 cartridge will cost a fortune ($600+) to replace with an equivalent, so look after it. The quoted tracking weight is a very light 1.0 gm. This is adjusted using a sliding weight located under the tonearm and with a calibration scale on the right side of the arm (as viewed from the front).

If it still sounds crap when correctly adjusted it is likely that the stylus is goosed. Cheaper new alternatives can be purchased from www.sound-smith.com or your existing cartridge can be refurbished at www.schallplattennadeln.de

Can anyone help me with this model? I just ended up with my brother's and it looks to be in very good shape but I think it was moved around without being in transport lockdown. I tried playing an album today real skippy & scratchy..and it seems to me the stylus weight is too light. I can't find an adjustment for that. I do see two plastic adj screws on the tonearm but they look to be anti skating adjustments. The cartridge is marked MMC1, and I think that is okay too.
