Pramanik's are still a part of the B&O family in that Helle Pramanik, Subir's wife I believe, works in Beocare, or at least she did 2 years ago.

Subir Pramanik. However I am afraid I don't think the letters SP are in honour of him. Engineer Pramanik joined B&O in 1965; the SP1 was introduced in 1960 and was the brainchild of Eric Rørbæk Madsen. I have a suspicion that SP stands for Stereo Pick-up!

Hi Harold

My late uncle had a Beogram 1000 (unfortunately stolen).

He did keep spare parts (not stolen), and this was one of them.

Perhaps the more knowledgeable pundits could determine if this NOS Maysonic stylus would be useful as a SP stylus replacement.

The SP's are apparently much more useful, as the styluses could be replaced (if I remember correctly), without having to replace the whole cartridge, like the later MMC units.

Subir Pramanik was however involved in the engineering of the Beogram 4000 and the MMC4000 cartridge as well as lending his name to the profile of the pick up of the MMC6000, a modified Shibata type stylus.

Hi Harold,

SP doesn't mean Spare Part (although I can see your logic here), all you need to know about these & other B&O cartridges can be found HERE in the products list of Beoworld.

The SP I believe is taken from the name of the man who designed the profile of the diamond stylus but the name escapes me S***** Pramanik I think???.

The SP.. numbers are the type numbers. You will find it printed on the underside of the headshell along with the B&O logo.

Having said taht, there are cartridges/needles/headshells out there from parallel producers that has no logo and often no type numbers either.

However, you are communicating with a 77 year old wrinkly - so before I start my investigation on the Links you kindly supplied, I would be very greatful if you will kindly explain the derivation of ' SP6/7 and SP14' etc., Are these specific Spare Part numbers for B & O equipment

Didn't know that Peter, I assumed the SP12 being higher spec'ed would automatically make it the best choice - I've obviously got more to learn oh wise master

I agree with looking on ebay though, they do come up quite regularly and for much less than a supplier would charge.

Actually you really want either a SP6/7 or an SP14 for the Beogram 1000. The compliance is different than that for the SP10 or 12 though these will work. I would look for New Old Stock on eBay for these - you only need the stylus.

other than risking ebay where prices will be cheaper (there's THIS on ebay USA) you could try MUSONIC I don't know of any other store in the UK but I'm sure there will be others out there.

You can use SP10, SP12 or SP14 the SP12 being the highest specified.
