Thanks for your response. You are correct when you say that the hexagonal section has split. The cap that goes into it has a very tight fit and simply blows that thin section apart when the plastic ages. A glue would only work up until the time that the cap need to be forced back in and then the tower splits wide open again.

When the hexagonal section has split and expanded, the sliding part is no longer able to slide smoothly. If the tape is put in, in a way that forces the sliding section down, it is unable to spring back and lock in with the cassette. Thereafter, rewind will simply not work. My solution at the moment is to line up the cassette correctly before I put it in - then everything works OK. As you say, you could glue it in place and that might just force the spool to twist when it loads.

In the meantime, I will bide my time and see if a spare one turns up.

Regards

Hard to tell in that photo, is that the hexagonal part of the reel tower that is broken ?
I've seen this happen lots of times. The triangular part that grips into the tape reel
can no longer pop up and down under its spring load but will seize on the tower and
not grip correctly into the tape reel.

Martin

EDIT: I just noticed you gave the part number so yes, that's the part I was referring to.
You can make an "emergency repair" and simply glue the moving triangular part to the
upper part of the hexagonal part of the reel tower. This will make it work but of course
not provide the ideal solution.
I'm not sure I can help you with a part, but I will take a look and see what I have.

Supply reel for BC5000 Type 4921

Hi everyone

My Beocord 5000 tape deck has been playing up recently, not rewinding properly at all. The problem has now been traced to a cracked plastic supply reel and this cannot be glued or fixed. The supply reel and the takeup reels are identical and are shown on the following photo. In the service manual they correspond to part number 2726002.

Question: Does anyone have a spare reel in their odds and ends box that they are prepared to part with? My alternative option is to find an entire tape mechanism, working or otherwise from which I can take the appropriate parts.
