Cars: Fact or Fiction?

Hello Everybody

As a car buff, but one who currently doesn't own a car, I had a conversation recently with an old friend who is an engineer, and a very pragmatic and somewhat opinionated one at that.

His point was that the modern car is CAD/CAN designed and manufactured using mainly robotised production methods, and consequently perceptions between brands on the grounds of either quality or ability are just that - perceptions.

Sounds a little like the world of Hifi with mainstream v's specialist 'high end' products then.

Taking this argument further, he commented that one should buy the car, not the brand, and that a Toyota or Nissan for example, will be every bit as good as a BMW or Mercedes for example in quality and ability.

I'm not sure whether to agree or not.

As to getting you from A to B reliably and safely, which is the main reason most folks buy a car, then yes, but as to the manner of the going?

I drove his Nissan Primera, his wifes new Ford Fiesta, and also a new Suzuki Swift whilst away overseas, and have had the loan of a 12 year old, W210 E200 Kompressor Mercedes for a few days since my return, and in terms of its comfort (seating, ride, smoothness, quietness (road, engine and wind noise), and ergonomics/feature set, there is no comparison - the Mercedes simply walks it in my humble opinion.

And that's just it - it's an opinion and a perception. I wonder if it was possible to set up a blind ABX between the Mercedes and the other cars mentioned, whether I'd really be able to tell the difference.

So what do you think?

Were my engineering friends comments on the mark, or is there a difference between brands that can be quantifiably proven, and not just as regards opinions and perceptions?

And if so, what are those differences likely to be, and how might they be achieved?

When speaking about home furniture, this means lamp, sofa, table, chairs, et.

A few months ago, a Paul Smith shop opened here in Luxembourg. A few weeks ago, Sabrina, my wife, bought me a PS shirt which I am very happy with, because even after a long day, it does not look "worn". Last weekend, I went to the shop myself and got 2 other PS shirts and I am sure these won't be the last ones.

I've wondered for a while if there are any other coffee addicts on the forum? If so, what equipment do you use at home to make your daily fix?

I upgraded from a Gaggia Baby to a La Pavoni Europiccola a couple of years ago, and after about a year of practice (!), can now pull decent shots (it's all about the tamping) and finally have cracked the milk wand and can froth the milk before it boils too quickly. I'm currently using a Gaggia MM burr grinder and get my beans from www.hasbean.co.uk. My girlfriend thinks it's all a load of tosh (she's from the north west and prefers tea), but I've always liked the challenge of operating a lever machine and getting it to produce something even drinkable (never mind the elusive 'God-shot').

Anyone else??

Been outside in sub zero weather (and rain) for two days trying to sort the clutch out for the second time in a year :( Basically the thrust bearing is shot a long story but had to share this I think it is a bit freaky lol...

now bear in mind the milage is as I attempted to set off out Tuesday night when the clutch pedal hit the floor with a thump and i never got off the drive...

Would you believe it! Not at all suspicious but even I can see the funny side!

Feeling utterly miserable and still haven't finished :( And people think B&O stuff can be difficult - if any Beoworlders have ever had a MkVI Escort gearbox out and can relate to 'that' bracket let me hear your pain [:'(]

Used Leica or new Nikon DLSR?

I am looking to buy a nice DLSR and really like the look of the Leica Digilux 2/3 cameras. I am a total amateur when it comes to photography and want to buy a nice camera to hopefully take some decent photographs with!

The Nikon D5000 has been recommended to me by a friend who is a photographer, but I think a Leica would be a cooler camera.

Would it be foolish to opt for a second hand digilux camera over a new D5000? Can the pictures taken on the Leica be worse purely down to spec? I always thought that a decent quality camera could produce great photos regardless of specification (similar to the old/new hifi debate I suppose!)

I just want something that is reliable with decent performance that is easy to use really. The camera won't be used for any kind of professional work!

Any advice appreciated

Today a package arrived from my son in DK, the package started out in mid December with my son in Aarhus, he shipped with Danpost to Viborg where a friend of his took it to Mexico city, he delivered to a freind of ours in Guernavaca, Mexico. Our freind went on vacations and didn't come back until Jan. 13, and yesterday we could meet and pick up the package, you just cant ship high value items like this with anyone not thrusted, they may eat it, destroy it or loose it or god forbid keep it to themself.

In the package, a Xmas calender light, Licorice, Remoulade, Rostet onions, BM 2400 remote, Beo CDs and 2 figures for the FS

What do your desktops ... backgrounds ... screen savers ... look like ?

My desktops tend to be very cluttered ... I leave icons lying around representing the folders of projects I am working on ... a bit like my messy desk ... messy briefcase ... messy mind

BACKGROUNDS

I have a scene from a two street village we discovered when in the UK ... we walked down a grassy, hendge enclosed backlane between the two streets and I shot a picture, frame by the overhang across a nearby main road and (unfortunately) more modern housing encroaching up the valley:

SCREENSAVERS

At one stage I had B&O pictures on my desktop background ... and even made up a screensaver collection.

But at other times I had a Fine Art (and I do mean FINE art, i.e. not cheesecake) collection.

But on the BV8 screensaver I have over a thousand images of the English countryside ... what do you use ?

(and on my work PC it is a picture of the fabric selector)

Well no sooner than I got sent the new brochure last week for the all new version with wheels (Saab 9-5 Estate), it transpires that all production has stopped and the employees have not been paid!

They might turn it around yet, but those 9-5 estates might be the last and rarest Saabs of all.

OT: New year's eve in London

Hi there.

It's quite funny to think about, that once -back in the 60's, B&O and Philips had almost the same design.

Here's a few examples from the early sixties:

B&O Amplifier:

-and a Philips receiver:

Even the color of the front is the same...

-and the former danish company Arena made radios in a similar design...

Arena was taken over by Rank and closed around 1970 (as far as I remember). And then - later, (talking about design) it went all wrong for Philips...
Well -in recent years they have tried to do some designing again...

We see some beautiful B&O products messed with, abused or ruined, but it seems other great brands get the 'treatment' occasionally.. and this one makes me want to cry!

I have a very nice floorstanding lamp which I would be interested to know more about - It's manufactured in England by the "Architectural Lighting Ltd" and is an "E S Reflector Lamp" apparently, but I can't find any info about it on the net. I'm curious as to when it was manufactured etc etc.

It is very nicely designed and screwed together, in fact it actually looks lovingly handmade. It has a turned aluminium base and a curious switch design made from a single piece of milled aluminium. Hard to photograph when lit but looks great - The light pours out of the rear of the shade as well as the front and creates a very nice lighting effect.

I also think the design compliments a "Bang & Olufsen home" very well!

Anyone seen these before?

Lately I've been considering getting a dslr, i've been debating with my dad about how much he thinks I'd use it <ie not enough!>, but I think I can justify the purchase. I was just wondering what cameras fellow beoworlders use?! does a compact point and shoot camera do it for you? Or are you big into SLR's with a huge collection of lenses? Maybe you're still using film cameras?

I'll start us off, I currently use a Leica C Lux 2, a small compact digital camera.

Vacation in South Africa

Hi all,

Finally I am ready for a few weeks of vacation in 2012 in South Africa but I am not sure how to organize the trip.

Currently I am thinking of planning everything on my own. So flying via Johannesburg to Cap Town checking out the sights of both towns, flying back to Johannesburg, driving the panorama road to Krueger NP having some wonderful safari experiences in there.

As said before, maybe someone in here has made a similar trip, knows any kind of website, agencies organizing a decent trip like that.
