I'm quite sure it's not designed to be any kind of an option, it just happens to be possible to install it in two ways. Now take Joe Random who dismantles a pair of speakers and then puts them back together; having one end up the other way and one the other way obeys nicely the laws of probability...

(No offence to anybody called Joe Random.)

By the way, although looking pretty much the same, the predecessors C40 and C75 (counterpart of CX100) were bass reflex design (or more appropriately, log line). These later modes are all sealed.

I think I found some gasket material - it was some thin foam packing material from an eBay purchase. Any ideas on the design of the reversible back plate?

There are probably several products out there for gasket material, some specifically marketed for loudspeakers. Here's one.

I used that product on a pair of Beovox M70s. Here's a picture of the start of that regasket.

It seems odd that the internal part would be symetrical and have a hole in the alternate position that would allow a "vented" arrangement. I was just interested to see if anyone had any insight into this.

Anything with sound proofing qualities will do for gaskets, hard flooring underlay or thin rubber sheeting spring to mind.

I was working on a recently aquired set of CX-50 speakers and I noticed the previous owner has made some "modifications" like drilling a hole in the back to run speaker wires to bypass the DIN connector. Once I had the back plate opened to make the repairs, I noticed the plastic plate that holds the washer that provides strength to the hanger when wall mounting can be flipped 180 degrees and appears to provide a bass reflex port option. The previous owner had one speaker sealed, the other swiched to this bass reflex configuration. Is that a viable option for this speaker or am I missing the point? The previous owner also lost the foam gasket for the rear. Any ideas where I can get one or the material to make one myself? Thanks to all.

I have a couple of CX100's that I bought on ebay that a hole drilled in them. The previous owner had looped some rope through them in order to hang the speakers up. Never heard about a bass port on any CX's though ....
And I don't think the design and crossover are made to allow for a bass ports.
Can't help you with foam gaskets, sorry. I did put a very small bead of silicone sealer on a pair of CX's that had missing gaskets.
