Thanks everyone for your replies. I already have a Beolink 7000 (bought it last week) and even though it's not the easiest remote to use I love it. I will use the system with passive speakers but I will change to Beolab's in the not distant future. With your information I know what to look for: A Beosystem 6500 or 7000.

It depends what you want out of the system

You probably need to ask yourself a whole list of questions to arrive at the system thats right for you, for example price, active or passive speakers, link capability, which MCP do you prefer, does it have to be mint,then you get to how they look - you need to choose between 4 -

5000/5500 aluminium/grey,

6500/7000 mirror/black

5500/6500 all white

7000 all black

My personal preference if the 6500 mirror/black because of the look of them and they tend to be cheaper than 7000.

I have bought a lot of 5500 components over the past few years and have found that recently the incidences of faults seem to be getting more frequent....to be expected I suppose as they get older....just like the rest of us!

Depends what you want to use it for/with. The 5000 differs from the 5500/6500/7000 in that it can only use the MCP 5000 and Terminal 5000 remotes. If you have, or would like to own, either a Beolink 5000 or 7000 you might want to go for the 5500/6500/7000 series. That said, the amp in the 5000 is better than the one in the 5500/6500/7000, and the build quality (in my opinion at least) is slightly higher. What speakers do you plan to use? If passive, then you might consider the 5000 due to its superior amp. One final factor you should consider is what CD player you want. The CD50 was used in the 5000 and the early 5500 Beosystems, and I really like its idiosyncratic ways, with the upside down CD loading and the strange internal architecture with the single DAC. Lots of other people prefer the CD5500/6500/7000, so I guess you might want to have a listen to see what you prefer.

For my part, I have a Beosystem 5000 in my bedroom, and I'm very happy with it. Every now and then I do think about getting hold of a Beomaster 5500 so that I can use my Beolink 1000 with it, but as I haven't got round to it, I suppose I'm happy with what I've got!

The 7000 is obviously the newest and has the advantage that it will work with the newer TV easily in a combined system. It and the 6500 have Powerlink sockets that allow the use of the Beolab speakers.

The 5500 is a good all rounder and will be cheap. The CD5500 is probably the best of the CD players.

The 5000 uses unique remote controls and this is quite frankly a pain. However they are cheap and the amplifier is the best of the lot - especially the pre-amp. This was the first of the line, before the bean counters started getting rid of what was less popular and less used features. You lose the proper display on the Beomaster and the drop down control panel in the later models.

However if you have the funds, get the 7000 series - preferably with a Beolink 7000 - you won't be disappointed!
