I opted for carrying mine on its side in the back of an Escort - no choice really. All was well - plugged it in and it was working fine. Then I settled down to watch Eastenders (I don't like it, but like it better than unpacking things). It was OK for an hour and then the picture started strobing (flickering really quickly). Straight away I started panicing - great £500 to fix a TV I near enough crippled myself trying to move earlier.

Phoned a friend who was watching BBC1 too and said that it was happening to her as well. Weird because usualy the BBC apologise when such things happen. Anyway so far, so good.

I hope the move went well for you. I must say that I really do not want to move my Avant for as long as possible - it is an absolute nightmare.

Personally, i would not risk it. We didn't, when moving the BV3 (which was very nerve racking anyway)

Thank you all for your comments - it's this level of response which makes me feel I have lots of friends out there - I just haven't met them yet!

It used to be normal practice to carry CRT monitors face down in a car, as it lowered the CofG, and so reduced the probability of a disaster. The downside was that there is always some debris left inside the tube after manufacture, and it can end up on the shadowmask. Didn't often happen, and wasn't fatal. I can't think of anything else which carrying the unit face-down would do.

Graham - I appreciate the trouble you went through to get your comments to me today, so thank you especially for that.

Well I have always transported most TV's face down and on a good duvet. Never had any problems with tubes packing up after. Done it a few times with my BV3-32 and a host of other older model B&O TV's.

And Brett and I have transported quite a few 32in Avants on their faces with no problems (they won't stand up in my Discovery).

Damn, thanks for that - looks like I have had a lucky escape then - not going to risk that again when I move it over the weekend

Can anyone else confirm that - I have transported other TVs in this manner with no probs - surely a B&O is no different - I am only going a few blocks and lets face it unless you have a van it would be difficult to transport it upright...

I've transported an Avant, face down with plenty of padding in the back of an estate - a week later the tube went! When I contacted B&O the first question asked was how I transported and apparently transporting them horizontally is a big no-no. If at all possible, transport it upright

Hi:

My Avant was transported from Hull to Cambridge (200 miles roughly) in the back of a Fiat Punto (2dr) and I think from what I remember it was screen down but wrapped in high quality (thick) duvets.

The Fiat Punto was an ideal car with which to transport the TV because its tailgate is almost vertical whereas in an Xantia it is more sloping and thus low (right). However as it is longer than the Fiat I do not think you will hav much trouble especialy if you load it in from the back stand first so that the stand is hanging over the edge of the seats (in the middle between the two front seats) and not meaning that the stand is nearly or definitely touching the glass of the tailgate.

I have never tried to remove the base although I know it can be done (in part) as you can buy the disc part as a spare part off of Ebay from time to time.

I think providing that you put lots of duvets underneath the front panel so that in a way it provides some suspension/shock absorption you should not have a problem. The Avant is very heavy but manageable with two people. I have to move mine tomorrow to a new house and successfuly moved it up a flight of stairs and down another few steps in my current flat. It is essential to do it in small stages with frequent breaks so that you do not hurt yourself. A sack barrow would eliminate most of these issues.

There are hand holds placed around the Avant which are of limited use. All in all it should not be difficult to move and transport just leave plenty of time to appraise the situation - namely make sure all doors are open and paths clear because once you have this thing in your hands it is not easy to put it down and start messing around opening and closing things.

You will definitely need two people to move this and without being sexist I mean two fairly well built men!

i got mine in the back of a focus...pilllows tp get the top level with the stand so its flat..its a bugger to lift..2 strong men or womeb needed !

I tried tacking this onto an existing thread, but the formatting went to pot. I'll try again...

I'm hoping to pick up a 28" RFT VCR Avant shortly, and plan to carry it face down in the back of a Citroen Xantia. I've seen to comments above about using duvets. My plan is to use sleeping bags plus some armchair cushions. Some questions:

1. I assume that the majority of the weight is in the tube. Should the weight be taken on the tube face, or the surround?

2. To avoid breaking the back window of the car, it would be nice to remove the base. Should the disk base be removed for transportation? If so, then how do I do this?

3. Can the front panel below the VCR slot take weight?

4. If I'm carrying a chest of drawers, I put it against the back of the car, and use the ledge above the bumper as a pivot. Since this will line up with the bottom of the screen, or the speaker grill, this does not seem practical for an Avant. How do I get the thing in the car in the first place? All I can think of is to fasten two pieces of wood at right angles, stand the TV on it, and use it as the bit in contact with the car.

5. Will two of us be able to get the thing into the car, or will we need more help?

Sorry for so many questions, but I'd like to get this right!
