It doesn't (translate to LCD). Look at my thread about my new BV7-40 MKIII. 300 looks dreadful (!) on both SD and blu-ray, whatever the source. Oh-oh. It shows that LCD really does show any flaw in the source.

Well of course the true HD signal looks better, you'd expect it to, but the difference isn't as vast as you would expect. The BeoVision 9 in the window of the Bath store fools me into thinking I'm looking at an HD signal, although whether this will translate as well on an LCD panel I don't know...

Alex, not in my tests. I have the same SD and blu-ray DVDs (300, Layer Cake etc) and the blu-ray editions are way better than the SD equivalent. The SD DVDs, upscaled, look a bit washed out and you can definitely see pixalisation. The blu-ray DVDs are almost flawless, in comparison. Sound is better, too.

This test was on a 1-day old BV7-40 MKIII though, so I have to do more extensive testing when I have time.

i think one of the reasons that blu ray and hd dvd are struggling is that you really need a big tv to really show the difference between upscaled dvd and hi-def , most hd tv's are c. 32-40" and it's just not big enough !

the problem is - who on earth wants a 60+ inch monster in their house that will look dominate the room and probably look truly awful with sd ?

i think bno are quite correct in being extremely cautious over this whole debacle

for all we know - both formats could ultimately fail and itunes and it's movie service ( soon to be 720p - 1080i hd ) could be the eventual winner

the big advantage of downloads is finding the film and not having your shelves cluttered up with scratchable discs , plus all the hassle of finding the disc tray in the dark etc

i'm all for it as going from a pile of cds to a nice simple to access hard disk has revolutionised my musical activity as i'm sure it has everybody elses

the picture on my avant via rgb from a freeview digi box is as sharp , natural and impressive as a blu ray on one of my bravias

nuff said

if only bno made an avant with an lcd i'd buy one tomorrow

This would be a big step forward IMO and may be the best solution to come to an end in this "war of formats".
