I'm back!

Thankyou for your kind comments. I'm sure you want to know what I ended up with.
Well I'm sorry to dissapoint all you avid Mac fans but finances don't allow for a new computer. Heavens, I have to pull out #350 tomorrow for my Beo5, then I'm off to see my mate Ed in holland in October, then I have the Beoworld Xmas party!
So I ended up buying a new hard disc for my PC and downloading a whole new Windows XP on it.
Still got a lot of glitches to sort out yet, but at least I'm online. Perhaps someone will help me out later, when I post questions on the PC forum.

Macs are just getting better and better all the time, the nearest thing behind OS X is Windows, which I would say is around 5 years behind OS X in terms of list-able functions, and around 10 years behind in terms of actual functionality.

Mac OS X are built on a Unix platform, and Linux are simular to Unix but not som advanced or hard to program.

Correct, although that doesn't really make much difference to the user other than the fact that they're both far more reliable than Windows (which isn't based on UNIX). OS X's GUI is far better designed than any other I've used, and uses less resources too.

My mate Andy will be positively vibrating with frustration if he knows the sad announcement of his temporary incapacitation has degenerated into yet another Mac discussion unless of course there is a version with inbuilt sock drawer.

What's all this about Macs?

PCs are just fine. I should know, we have six of them. Of course, they constantly need care and a bit of work here and there, but that's really the solution. Don't get a Mac, get six PCs instead. You'll probably have at least one of them in working order.

(Actually all of our computers are working fine. At least since I reinstalled MythTV on the HTPC, and replaced the motherboard, CPU and memory in my son's computer. Twice.)

If you do get a Mac please promise you won't drone on about it incessitantly - just think what the world would be like if the remaining 95% of computer users filled up forums telling others how great their computers were - there'd be no space for sock related posts
