I'm satisfied with where I live, and why shouldn't I be? I chose to move here as it's a great location near England's second most important financial centre. Having moved from somewhere I was unhappy, I'm sorry if my civic pride and general sense of wellbeing has jarred with some contributers here. Also, and as you're a Man U supporter Lee, I think you'll find the grey skies and terrible weather are more often than not confined to the west of the Pennines (i.e. Manchester) rather than Bradford and its surrounding environs. You've been out of the North too long, and sound like every other southerner moaning about the wet, cold, grey North - the kind of downtrodden, cold, despairing place that no longer exists. I re-read The Road to Wigan Pier recently, and I always imagine the more stereotypical southern conceptions of the North to be not dissimilar to the North that Orwell described in the 30s. It's just not the case, and is not helped by other Yorkshiremen heaping maudlin stereotype after another about how grey, depressed and back breaking ordinary life is here!

Apologies if any Yorkshire/Northern detractors out there were being tounge in cheek - that didn't come across in your posts, though I accept that sometimes the subtle nuances that we intend are lost in forum posts.....

I have heard and read this elsewhere already. I think nobody is satisfied with the place/ region he lives in and has to be told by tourists how beautiful it is where he lives.

Well, i am an exiled Yorkshireman, living on the sunny South Coast of England where the weather is lovely and there is fresh sea air to breathe. I am delighted to live here, but my fellow 'Eastbournians' seem to do nothing but moan about the place and be miserable! The weather is warm, the place is pristine, crime is very low (an errant squirrel stealing acorns would make the front page of the Eastbourne Herald!), and there is always something going on. They are a depressed bunch on the whole...

However, i drive back to the constant grey carpet of cloud that nestles above Bradford to see my family - and they are the happiest bunch of people i've met. Friendly, polite and welcoming almost without fail - and they don their shorts and t-shirts if the temperatures hit the dizzy heights of 10 degrees celsius! - Every time you slam your car door you trap a hoodies fingers, crime is rife, and the landscape is grey, black, and grey with green (that's mud and grass by the way) and yet they still have a cheeriness about them..

I have come to the conclusion that we Brits actually love to moan, and the more we have to moan about the happier we are!

However, that blows a hole in the theory, as j0hnbarker is from West Yorkshire.

Yorkies seem to relish being in a cloud of gloom, a bit like "pig in sh!t" type of thing. Another way to bring gloom is to say it's not manly, not butch. Strangely then as a counterpoint, the gloomy Yorkie has some unusual gentile hobby like a dried flower collection. Beneath the donkey jacket and pit booits (boots) lies a sensitive caring person.
This is why B&O stuff is so important to us Yorkshire folk, our lives are full of gloom, rain, mud and dirt, we need something glorious to look at. Something worthy, something to justify the effort of breaking off the baked on muck from our eyelids.

Crikey Dave! As I sit looking out of my office window as the sun glistens off the office buildings in central Leeds, it's kind of hard to reconcile your earnest assessment of the Yorkshire weather, psyche and downtrodden landscape. Tell me, do you miss the place much? I guess at least it's drier in Gloucestershire........oh, hang on, it's not, is it.

I think you were a little unfair to suggest that as a person and Yorkshireman I am mired in gloom, resulting in macho slapdowns to other forum members who don't take umbrage with the Party smiley in the same way that I do. I may perhaps have an excess of civic pride that fuels a strange collecting hobby based on bright yellow charity logos, though surely that's preferable to painting other people with such broad, maudlin strokes as you have in your post.

All animated smileys annoy me.

Having smileys at all is somewhere on the borderline between dignity and triviality, IMHO, but since this is a forum, and we're all communicating via written word, we have neither voice inflection nor body language to help us emphasize our points. The stationary images help fill in the gaps nicely, I think. However, the animations are distracting. But I have too many other things to think about in my life... I won't let it get to me. If you want to express yourself that way, more power to you, as long as I can understand what you're saying.

However, if enough people say "kill the party smiley" i will consider exterminating it... But, i think j0hnbarker may have a 'one man lynch mob' a-huntin old party-boy...
I do have some more smileys lined up to annoy you all, and some will go. Got to keep it interesting!

PS - Please remember Pudsey Bear = Charidee ... i'm sure j0hnbarker means well with the avatar, even though it's holding a shotgun!

Pudsey is brandishing a Beolink 1000 Lee, but I can assure you it's not in anger (at least as long as the Party smiley isn't around).
