Personally, I think you need to be pretty daft to even think about paying B&O type money on a technology that is still evolving at the LCD/Plasma sort of rate. Just my opinion, mind.

I am not sure how big a part the cost of the actual panel plays in the high overall cost of the TV.

I am guessing that the panel itself could be bought in for maybe 20% of the retail cost of the TV. If the cost of the panel drops by 10% the overall cost of manufacturing and selling the TV would decline by around 2%, and passing that saving onto the customer would have no effect on overall sales.

How much did you pay for your first video? - I paid £1100 for mine ( now £38) the first plasma?( the first sony plasma was £14500) the difference now is that the public is not being convinced that every new technology is a sufficient step forward to justify the price and as a result the proces drop still further to stimulate demand.( more so now that companies are confident to source LCD from China) the china prices are 40% less than sources from europe.
As to the relationship with B&O pricing- they are a lifestyle brand and will charge lifestyle prices- B&O want profit and lots of it! if B&O follow collapsing consumer electronics prices they will be out of business. There seem to be enough customers who dont care what it costs!

Agree 100% with this. The last sentence is the one that really counts.

Its an interesting point - and being involved in a consumer electronics company in china I realise that most brands make no money at all.

I think the question is what would YOU DO if you were at the head of B&O?? ok so plasma prices are down. If they reduce the price of the BV9 by - lets say £2500- will this equate to more sales??? does the average B&O customer who spends £15K on a tv set really care if its £2.5K cheaper?? the reduction of prices would have to be of such a magnitude to stimulate demand and even then will the average sont or pioneer punter buy B&O- NO THEY WONT!

So whilst I look at B&O prices with increasing incredulity, If i was running B&O its what I would do!

Surely a perfect example of this is DVD players, You can now buy one in the U.K. for around £20. Even a recognised brand can be picked up for £35 - £40. Now look at the price of the DVD1.

Well the Dunlop thing is hardly comparable. More like if the engine supplier reduced their pricing, you would expect the whole car to be cheaper.

I appreciate that there is considerable cost in putting together B&O kit with sophisticated designs and materials - plus a high manpower cost, but if the build of materials cost reduces - especially on major componants, there is no reason why the end product can not also reduce in price unless it is a factor in the item's business plan that expects componant costs to decrease over the product lifetime to maintain a product profit.

I'm afraid that this will not influence the B&O price list. At all. They claim that even if Dunlop would lower their price on tires, prices of BMW's and Audi's would remain as-is...

On the other hand: Today, the BV9 is a much better package than the BV5 was back in the spring of 2006 (same price, +8", HDR-2 included, IcePower, a panel that matches the competition...)

According to new price data from market analyst WitsView, street prices of LCD and plasma TVs, and LCD monitors, continued to decrease during July. LCD screens covering 32-, 37-, 40- and 42-inches dropped between 0.8 and 2.2 per cent, compared to the previous month; plasma screens between 42- and 50-inches declined between 2.6 -3.6 per cent. Wide screen computer monitors, including 19-, 20- and 22-inches slipped between 0.9 - 3.6 per cent. Curiously, 17-inch 4:3 monitors rose in price, by 2.2 per cent.
