I think you're right about something mechanical is off... Opening up the platter doesn't seem to offer much info - where should I be looking specifically? I don't really know how the arm is synched to the tray. How do I get into the guts of the arm mechanism?

I've got a newly acquired Beogram RX-2 from late 80's... It was working very well for about 2 days, after it had been sitting for probably years. Tonight it stopped working... Pressing the Cue button will cause it to do everything it should - spin, move needle over to the first track - but then the needle will never drop. You can hear a bit of a clicking noise at this point, as if some cogs are not catching or something. After a few seconds the arm will return to the 'off' position.

Any ideas?

Also, this happened after I put a kinda stiff record on the tray. The hole in the middle was a bit tight, so I did need to use a bit of force (but nothing crazy) to get the record loaded.

Sorta unrelated - where should the weight on the end of the arm be set at?

Thanks!
