The HDCP licensors (the studios) do not give a key to manufacturers of such a device - the manufacturers re-use one that is meant for a legitimate use. Technically, the HDCP Licensors could disable the key - but this hasn't happened yet (and is unlikely). The use of the key on devices not identified to the licensors is prohibited. That's what I meant. The use of a downscaler is not necessarily illegal - but then I didn't say that in the first place.

Recording video is still an issue for the licensors because video does have a complex set of release windows (both in time and region).

iCloud does not support accessing of video (yet) - only audio and other documents and settings.

I've used a downscaler on an ATV2 and it works fine. It is useful in a HDMI-based solution because it can also distribute downscaled video via the link system (RF) to other rooms.

Re: BeoSystem 3 and Apple TV 2

frog:

HDCP is in passthrough mode in the Beosystem 3 - so that isn't the problem - and i'd hesitate on buying a new box - specially as it downscales unnecessarily for your needs. The issue with the avant is different as it is the downscaler box that needs to have an active HDCP key as it is a terminator (and not really legal :) ).

The use of a down scale convertor is not illegal. HDCP is concerned with the transmission of protected content in HDMI and the possible use of a recording device using the HDMI signal. The convertor in question is not striping the HDCP for use in HDMI signals, it is downscaling the signal and converting to composite (analog) which is a non-issue for HDCP, because HDCP is only concerned with HDMI.

The major legal issue with HDCP is that it is preventing the concept of fair use for individuals. This is interesting because the ever lowering cost of renting and purchasing content really renders the idea of recording anything fairly mote and I cannot see why anyone wants to record content. The addition of iCloud makes it even easier to protect and access your purchases.

In the case of the ATV2, the issue at hand is how the device is reacting to the downscaler, and this is a solution that actually works as found by trial and error. I get a real kick out of people that have not tried to use the convertor, and post their opinion that it won’t work, as I am watching the ATV2 through the Avant, which is really the only reason that I needed the convertor in the first place. Nothing more, nothing less.

I have not run across a handshake issue with BeoSystem 3, and we have an early series 1 in the store. If there were a handshake issue, it must have been resolved with software update. It appears the last time an update addressed HDMI issues was October 2009.

What I haven't done is run to a non-B&O screen. Is it possible the handshake issue is between BeoSystem 3 and the Pioneer? We have run Apple TV2 to every recent B&O television with nice results.

The problem that you are encountering is a security issue between the ATV2 and the B3. The ATV2 is looking for a security signal from the B3 which is designed to guard copyright protection, and while the lack of the security signal will usually generate audio, the video will then be altered in two common variants: black and white picture or no picture at all. You have proven that the ATV2 is in fact capable of generating the video by connecting it directly to your television.

This leaves you with the following options:

1. Contact B&O and find out if there is an update for the B3 to support the security signal.

2. Bypass the B3 and connect directly to the television.

3. Completely counterintuitive, but: hook up a convertor between the ATV2 and the B3, and feed the B3 through the non-HDMI connection. Below is my post as to what I used to convert the HDMI for use on the Avant:
