Luckily(?!), I haven't damaged the laser assembly, rather the clip on one of the shiny black plastic panels (behind the glass doors) that needs to be removed to get access to the screws in order to remover the laser assembly. Thanks for confirming the numbers.

I'm assuming the black plastic panels are available as spare? They were certainly not easy to get off!

The other numbers are date codes - not important.

Because you've damaged it, it might be a better idea to buy a complete CDM12.4 chassis including the motor, but without the PCB.

This ebay chassis 170581936772 is at the seller from whom I've bought with no problems.

I have no idea if B&O had a special chassis made for them, or if they used the off-the-shelf generic Philips 12.4 chassis.

Even if the chassis you get is not quite the same, the little bits and parts are the same, and you can use them on your existing B&O chassis.

If it is the same, bonus - just plug the whole thing in as is.

I've removed the laser. The numbers on the ribbon and the first number on the chip are identical to yours. Does it matter that the other two numbers on the chip are different?

They are N72EK9 and HfH9740.

I also managed to break one of the clips on the right hand (facing the unit) plastic panel, despite being ultra careful. Anyone have a spare they'd be willing to part with?

Hi - from my own experience, B&O wanted over £300 to replace the laser and board in my BS3000 - friend of mine bought the laser mechanism off someone on e-bay who specialises in these - it was sent through really quickly and cost £60 - £100 and it worked. It seemed unlikely to us that it was the board as it's electronic so more likely to be the laser which has mechanical parts. Anyway, it was a happy story and it's back to as good as new.

Thanks for your replies. Looks like I'll have to check what's inside after all.

There seem to be two Phillips lasers on eBay: the cdm 12.2 and cdm 12.4 as used by Menahem.

Thanks for the advice Menahem. As you say $15 is not a lot to lose. Just have to get into the Ouverture...

$15 is not a lot to lose, and the Chinese sellers seem to fall over themselves to keep their customers happy and keep their 5-star ratings..

I've done 2 of these with the CDM12.4, and both were AOK. I would have no qualms about ordering more.

There's not a lot of guesswork here - if the laser assembly which you've got matches the picture I posted, then that's what you order. Serial numbers are not required to order these.

Of course, the owner has to be tech-minded to be able to replace only the laser, and it is precisely these owners at whom the laser-only is aimed.

At this age, there'd have to be a serious problem if the PCB or motor needed replacement - I seriously doubt whether these are generally failing at this time. Another 15 years - Maybe.

I have replaced a number of mechanisms on this type so I am aware of the official procedure.

From your previous answer, you seem to be infering that it was possible to order "B&O lasers"!!

I believe that it is the laser only that is available from China and that is what Menahem is describing.

The fact that the Chinese laser is cheap makes it attractive to a significant number of our members!

I have been using the "you only get what you pay for" arguement for years, but it only seems to be appreciated once the purchaser has been at least "once burnt"!

Hi Graham,

No , you order the entire mech assembly, you cant just order the laser component, nor would you want to. Sometimes the issue can be the laser diode, sometimes the motor and sometimes both.

Rather than make a mistake on ordering these you have to give the serial and type number of the machine so as to confirm the correct part is ordered.

So we dont order these by part number.

Some machines also need a board replacement.

We fitted an original B+O laser on his Ouverture and its worked perfectly ever since.

The B+O parts are more expensive but as ive always said, you get what you pay for.

IIRC, this uses a CDM12.4

Here is a picture of the CDM12.4 - you will need to disassemble yours to see if it has EXACTLY the same unit - the Philips chip is labeled TDA1302T.

If your ribbon assembly is the identical looking unit, you can order a CDM12.4 from any ebay seller in China - about $15.

You do NOT need the whole motor unit, just the laser with the TDA chip and integrated flex-cable.

Ouverture Laser Replacement

I'm wondering if anyone knows whether the type of laser need to replace a faulty one in an Ouverture, can be determined from the serial number or type number.

I don't really want to dismantle the item before the repair if I can avoid it. Mine is not the radial laser version.

Additonally, can anyone suggest a good source for new lasers? Do they have to come from B&O?
