SPDIF-IN of a BLb 5 is only activated if the source/command is "CD" and the BLb 5 gets
this information/command via a FULLY MOUNTED (all 8-pins connected) PowerLink Cable!

The only possibility to use the SPDIF-OUT of a BM5 is:

- Disconnect the "normal" Audio-Master (BSd4/3200/9000 or BC2 in "A.Opt" "0/1/2") from the ML-System
- Change your settings of your BSd 5 (Audio-Master) and change/rename "NETMUSIC" to "CD"
- Connect BM5-OUT > BLb5-IN and BLB5-OUT > BLB5-IN via 2 SPDIF cables
- Connect 2 FULLY MOUNTED PowerLlink cables either from your TV or your BM5 PL-OUTs >> BLb5 PL-INs

So the SPDIF is converted back to analog for the PL?

then what's the point?

Avoids an extra conversion step. When listening in speaker 5, the BeoVision/System will convert into digital for the surround sound DSP processing. By connecting the dig. out of the BM5 into the TV, you avoid the DAC in the BM5, and the ADC in the TV/BeoSystem.

Re: Beolab 5 strangeness

So the SPDIF is converted back to analog for the PL?

Yes, I think too, it`s a ML problem. Audio path in ML is a balanced signal, so one wire might be missing. That results in less volume and thinner sound. So your other sources might have the same problem when being distributed via ML.

BM5 spdif out is meant to be connected to your BVs digital input. I have mine connected to my BV7-40 MKIII., and as far as I remember it is used when I switch my BM5 to PC mode...(?) BM5 is switched to analog out for distribution via ML. I think spdif is also used when your BM5 is audiomaster and your BLs directly connected to BM5.

The BM5 is connected via ML only in to the ML network (I have temporarily connected the SPDIF from the BM5 in to my lab 5s . . .I can't tell any difference)

The BS9k is connected via ML only in to the ML network

I did notice that the BM5 (when distributed) is giving the same indications (the left channel is much louder) I believe that's an ML problem. . .

HOWEVER, what is the deal with the SPDIF? I ordered SPDIF cables for my BM5 to connect directly in to the Lab5s. . but it doesn't appear the Lab5s will recognize the SPDIF coming from the BM5s. . Your BL5s are connected to BS3 Powerlink out? Your BM5 is connected via ML and stereo analog cable (rca) to BS3? And your CD (BS9000?) is connected via ML to BS3? I`d guess it`s a faulty ML cable (one pin of 3 for the right channel missing...?) or a faulty rca cable - if connected.. Is it a problem from beginning or did it appear after your setup already worked properly?

Ask one question and you will get five back...<a title="Smile - ">
