After my BV10 SW update, the screen is now perfectly acceptable, 80% of the clouding is gone.

Who really knows the dynamics of the OEM supply chains? I recall a former employer signed a development deal with Ford Auto 5 years prior to putting the first yard of fabric in the Taurus interior. Since I doubt that any screen supplier gets overly excited with B&O volumes, it would logically follow that meeting B&O's demands comes with a price tag or contract that other makers would not accept. I also guess it's not easy for B&O to adapt to the line changes the OEM makes in order to do 2-3 model variants in a year, and even harder to change suppliers quickly (but that is truly a guess).

This would seem to add up to the need for B&O to make decisions very thoughtfully: not something the consumer electronics industry tends to respect. Even Pioneer admitted to losing around $1500 per piece (and that's what they admitted to) during its heyday with the "legendary" Kuro, before they left screen production. Now you can buy Pioneer Elite on Amazon.com.

As far as cost-cutting on screens to make a profit goes? I really doubt screen price was/is that big a driver. Outside of scarcity, the solution for luxury electronics would then be based solely on the capacity of Chinese labor and the resilience of Chinese rivers. History addresses the concept many times. Only the names have changed.

The mass market,so we are told, clamours for LCD TVs,and generally the cheaper the better,but since B & O is not catering for said market,there is no reason for it not to offer technology that offers the best PQ with components sourced from the highest quality suppliers.

Edge lit LED panels,to my mind,do not offer the best PQ,and presumably are cheaper to manufacture than full backlit LED panels.

Sharp certainly manufacture full back lit LED panels in smaller sizes,so if B & O wish to provide LCD TVs,why not utilise Sharp panels.

Surely it can't be for cost cutting reasons,or can it?

As for Plasma Panels not being thin,LG have manufactured them less than 25mm in depth.

The BV10 has a Samsung panel - as do all the LCD/LED sets. The BV4 has a Pansonic plasma screen, as have all the plasma sets. The actual screens are regularly updated during the model's life.

Sites who rated the BV7-55 very highly now rate the Panasonic VT series (plasma) as their reference TV (in the absense of the Kuro, from which Panny bought out all of their plasma patents).

Plasmas are getting thinner, although nowhere near as thin as the current Samsung LCD's (with LED backlighting), but I would imagine a modern plasma would fit comfortably within the BV7 housing (my speculation).

I bought a Panny 46" G20 - not quite as good as the VT series according to reports, although the 3D VT series wasn't available at the time and I didn't realise the 3D VT would also be better overall at 2D, SD & HD Sat broadcasts too.

Still, I'm very happy with my plasma in THX mode! I'm not a movie buff, nor fan of suround sound - I'm happy with my SD picture quality on SKY+ and don't feel the need for SKY HD. My TV has both 3D Freeview & 3D FreeSat and when I flip from 3D FreeSat to "normal" Sky, although there is a difference, it is negligeable, at least from my viewing position and with my specs (and Mrs. P. doesn't even notice at all)!

Call me a philistine if you will!

Thing is at this moment Samsung is the leader LED producer. Pioneer left the market, Sony is not as good. So is Samsung, LG and Sharp, so unless i am missing something Samsung is the way to go in terms of LED screens.

Samsung has never been associated with high end quality, at least with Sharp the panels are of a higher qualty. In any event, its the technology thats flawed- If customers are happy to pay in excess of 10K euros for it then thats a choice that will please B&O im sure!
