Are you using your Beo4 to control the Freeview box? (in which case you'll have an IR blaster stuck to the freeview to transmit the signal to the box via the TV.) If not I assume you must be controlling the freeview box with its own controller.

Hi Graham, yes good question...

I am currently controlling the freeview box with it's own remote - although the seller (Chap from B&O store Chelsea in fact) kindly gave me a little chip in a little black box which he said was the STB controller..

It would be nice to be able to do everything from the Beo4 - but I thought I would wait a little before having it fitted to the BV5 because I was thinking about buying a new Sony DVD/Freeview combination box (to kill 2 birds with one stone, as I currently dont actually have a DVD player (i got some dvd's but nothing to play them on!)

What are your thoughts on this...? And do u know how much they would charge to fit this STB chip in my telly?

Michael

p.s. yes for some reason last night my posting said it needed to be checked by a moderator for 'approval' not sure why, never happened to me before...

Hi Michael,

In my experience a dealer is likely to charge you £150 for a call-out. If you've been given the chip you will find advice from Keith on this forum about how to fit it, but I suspect that it's one of those things that is straight forward to someone familiar with the procedure, but full of risk for anyone doing it for the first time. In my case my BV5 (2002) was built pre-Freeview so the appropriate STB was not in the menu. I decided to buy a used HDR1 which has a built-in post freeview chip, and did this on the basis that spending £150 -£200 oon the HDR1 would cost the same as the dealer call-out, but I would get the benefit of the recorder effectively for nothing. The disadvantage of this approach is having to always select the HDR1 using V.Tape, and to then hit the yellow button to select the Freeview box. I also use the TV's built-in old STB controller for Sky which I access directly with the SAT button. The IR blaster connections cost about £15 each.

The IR blaster is the small connection that transmits the signal from your TV to the front of the Freeview box so that you are controlling the box with the Beo4. The scart connection will enable the TV to autodetect the Freeview signal but you'll have to use the Freeview remote to change channels rather than the Beo4 without the IR blaster connected.

As you've pointed out, the TV selection button of the Beo4 is now redundant post the change to digital transmission: my particular Beo4 has V Tape and Sat: Freeview is connected to V Tape (via an HDR1) and Sky to Sat.

Glad you got it sorted out.

What i didnt realise was I needed to switch the TV on with DTV rather than just TV (i told u i was stupid)

And the scart connection from the freeview box needed to go in the 'Decoder' socket, which did surprise me actually.....Is the reason for that to leave the AV socket for a separate DVD player and the V.Tape socket for a VHS machine?

If you cannot find the same box in the list as used on your Avant then you can either get a later chip fitted by a B&O dealer, or for about the same cost buy an HDR1 which will already have the later chip. In that case, after setting it up, you need to select V.Tape then hit the yellow button to select the freeview box via the HDR1.

It's possible that the BV5 is pre-Freeview. What year is it? Have you found your Freeview STB in the STB menu (or the identical box that you had selected on your Avant?) Have you connected the IR blaster? Have you checked that it hasn't fallen off the front of the Freeview box during your change-over of televisions? (Apologies if all of this is obvious and already eliminated!)

Hi Graham,

I believe this BV5 is a 2003 model.

No my Freeview box is a Sony and there is no Sony option in the list of 45 names.

I dont know what an IR blaster is i'm sorry...

I dont remember ever selecting a STB on the Avant, the connection between Avant and Freeview box seemed to be automatic & immediate from what I remember and & once the TV had synced with the freeview channel I simply then had to tune in the channels using the auto-tune on the freeview (rather than the TV)

On this BV5, although I switch the freeview box on, i cannot seem to tune it into the freeviews channel frequency..

thanks

You don't need to tune as it is going through SCART. The BV5 is essentially exactly the same as an Avant so do just the same. It is best to use the AV or V.Tape sockets as they are RGB; the decoder is just composite. You need to allocate the appropriate socket to the Freeview box.

Don't have the stand on my BV5 so cannot help there!

Thanks for your reply Doc,

When u say allocate the appropiate socket to the Freeview box - how do I actually do that using Beo4?

When I go to Connections and select V.Tape or AV - it just throws up a list of 45 STB (SAT) brands such as Nokia or Humax etc etc. there is no Sony option to select...

If I just try to select one as an example e.g. Philips by pressing 'Go' on beo4 it just reverts to the 'Setup' Menu again....
