I had my mind set on a BG4500 for sale in my region and for a reasonable price. Just got a response that the BG was already sold. Maybe the buyer is using this forum as well?

Too bad, but on the other hand, now I can enjoy my search for a good BG for a longer time.

Hi,

For a while I have been looking to add a record player to my BS9000 & BL1+2 setup.

I would like to do this because I still appreciate the vinyl sound and probably also because of the sentimental feeling...

Anyhow, I know I need a build-in (or add on) RIAA amplifier. But otherwise I am a bit lost in the B&O range for record players.

What is the best choice to add to my setup? And what would be a reasonable street value?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Dennis

If your vinyl is in very good or mint condition you should go for one of the high end TTs, but if your vinyl is like mine, only a few in mint condition the rest worn of daily use and some with scratches, you will do well with less.

I'm using a BG 2404 with MMC 4, a RIAA with 3 extra line in connects from phonopreamps, BS 3000 to BL 4000/8000, and I'm happy with that. I bought a BG 5000 to repair, after repair I will think about a (S)MMC 2 for this one for playing mint condition vinyl.

All B&O TTs you can buy today will need a new cartridge if not provided, The original cartridges are all in bad condition because of age and use, most can be repaired, so count some 100 to 1000 USD (depending on cartridge you want) upon the price of the TT.

A note about the 4004 there were units that were upgradable to the RIAA / CD4 I had one about 20 years ago that was complete with CD4 switch on the right hand side of chassis and a VERY thick phono lead, so there must be decks that were fully converted...?

Re: best record player

Interestingly, you'll find the newer ones go for higher prices than the 4000-series.
This is pretty sweet ;)

The Beogram 6006/8000/8002 and 4000/4002/4004/6000 series are the best of B&O tangential players! I have had all but the 6000 as they quite rare, but vitally, it is a 4002/4004 with a circuit board that decodes quad discs.

The newer tangential decks are not in the same build and sound quality, but they are still very fine.

This represents top four of the Premier League in terms of sound quality with any of the higher end available cartridges. These decks are hard to find in good working order and need regular maintainance due to their age.

Still Premier League but not quite top four are the other B&O decks with built in RIAA namely, Beogram 3500, 4500, 6500 or 7000.

The low cost external RIAA pre amps which are advertised by some of our sponsors, are not quite Premier League sound quality or convenience, in my opinion. Personally I would avoid them.

I have the use of an external RIAA from www.phonopreamps.com which I use for testing non RIAA decks prior to dispatch. This comes very close to the built in pre amps in terms of quality but is slightly more expensive than the low cost items available.

Price will depend on where you buy and what you buy. From less than £100 up to as much as £1000. As a re-seller, I am far too qualified to comment!

best record player

Hi,
