Purely on the looks, I'd choose the MMC4000 over the black 20S. On the other hand it would be a shame to retip a cartridge that still gives decent service.

I believe these cartridges have very little (if any) internal differences, so if you have the 20S retipped, I'd upgrade the stylus and you'll essentially have a better cartridge model. A BG4000 deserves more than the base spherical 20S.

If you find a 20CL, you would probably need to have it retipped - or more properly, resuspensioned - right away as well unless you are extremely lucky... In this view, a 20EN would be a good alternative (also coloured silver).

Is that the MMC4000 I can get retipped to be an equivalent to a MMC20CL or the MMC20S?

For 159 euros you can get a retipping that is equivalent to MMC20CL. I am very fond of my retipped MMC2 with the same option

The treble response can be a little bad on a 30+ year old cartridge, and an original MMC20CL may be bad as well. The suspension hardens inside the cartridge, plus an eventual worn cantilever which probably is the issue here.

Well I got a Beogram 4000 with a MMC4000 and it actualy works fine. The only thing is that the sound is lacking at little discant. I am therefore thinking of getting Alex to retip it. I also have a MMC20s lying around, and the question is wich one should go to Alex. An other question is what kind of retipping I should get, keep it as orignal as possible or an upgrade.

The final possibility is to wait until a MMC20CL turns up, who everyone praises to the skies.

Any thoughts?
