BR through a PS3 and even 5.1 discs you still get sound out of all the speakers

I'm curious what your sound setting are on the PS3. I, too, use the PS3 for blu-ray and know that you definitely cannot get lossless sound matrixed from 5.1 to 7.1. This would only be possible if you are using simple Dolby Digital or simple DTS lossy sound sent as a bitstream rather than PCM to the BeoSystem 3 for matrixing. There has been much discussion and confirmation on the internet regarding this.

Re: Dolby/DTS 7.1 question

Setup =

BV9; Penta-front; 6000 rear; Beolab 11 sub (1)

I added Beolab 4 as surrounds, and made the 6000's "back". 4's are on B&O stands

Nice thing was BS3 did not require reinput of distances for speakers already in. Amplitude was carried over as well.

I *like* the 5.1, EX and IIx matrixed to 7.1 for all sources and all materials. Period.

Please let us know how it sounds to you. I have tried exactly what you are going to do and had a mixed opinion on the results. However, I have. Never left the 7.1 setup in place long enough to really give it a fair test.

Hi Razlaw

What were your mixed opinions?

5.1 still was 5.1. With a 7.1 track there was more sound but I was not sure if it was a better sound.

hi there so from what you have said i understnad that the tv will take the 5.1 and use all 7.1 which is what i really wanted to know anyway.

I think i will borrow some lab 4000 to see how this sounds and then maybe maybe move to 7.1

It will, but only for non-PCM signals. The BeoSystem 3 does not process the advanced blu-ray signals. The processing must be done via the actual blu-ray player and sent via PCM. Blu-ray will not use all 7.1 speakers if the disc is only 5.1.

Re: Dolby/DTS 7.1 question

Razlaw:

Hello All

Without stiring up an argument.

I have 5.1 speakers connected to my BV7.

If i connect the extra two giving me 7.1 will i notice any difference if im watching a 5.1 film? Does the BS3 do anything clever with the extra channels if the 2 extra pcm channels are not present in the bluray for example?

Cheers All

The internal BeoSystem 3-based processor will matrix most 5.1 signals to utilize all 7.1 speakers. However, it will not do this for multichannel PCM from the blu-ray player unless the blu-ray player is one of the very few that matrix the signal to 7.1 internally before sending the signal to the BeoSystem 3 processor. I'm doubting that the BV7 blu-ray player is one of those rare blu-ray players.

Re: Dolby/DTS 7.1 question

take a listen to this http://www.dolby.com/consumer/experience/dolbycast/transcript/11-surround-sound-from-stereo.html they talk a bit of the pl2x decoder.

Dolby/DTS 7.1 question

Hello All
