The following tech-specs appply to two slightly different cars:

"V8 engine with more than 400 HP
gearbox with more than six-speed"

Ferrari 458 Italia
Scania V8 Truck

It's funny how tech specs can mean anything and everything , that may also explain why B&O is giving us less and less info about tech specs..

I remember the first tech specs for BeoLab 8000 gave them a frequency response of 40 Hz at - 8 dB, while the BeoLab 6000 was rated at 70 Hz at -8 dB too...

Then suddenly B&O shifted to IEC freq.response, and the same speakers were rated at 52 Hz and 55 Hz...without changing the type nr or anything else in the speaker..

And now they go back to a -10 dB in the specs...reminds me of the output power figures given by the car radio manufacturers..

At the end of the day, you should trust you ears and nothing else, I guess..

I think it's a shame that after upgrading to compete 'digital' amplification there is no digital input like on BL5's. I'd say that (especially for B&O) class D amplification and digital music is the future, why not do away with DAC's and stuff and use the digital signal?

B&O has a chance to stand out in high quality digital amplification here. All they had to do is design a digital signal processor instead of a conventional active filter, like in BL5.

The digital signal which comes from your CD player or other sources (such as a DSP chip inside the BeoLab 5s) is very, very different to the sort of digital going on inside the ICE Power amps.

Adding a DSP actually complicates things and if it's not strictly necessary, can degrade the sound if introduced. Avoiding digital conversion steps is fairly important. It works in the BeoLab 5 because B&O have implemented very high quality ADCs and DACs. With the price point of the 6000 and 8000 (even the 3) it wouldn't make any sense.

Spot on - at 2.5W standby power consumption a mains switch would be mandatorily necessary ...

I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it - the specs they've released are complete tosh -

EFFECTIVE FREQUENCY RANGE*
48-28,000 Hz

MEASUREMENT CONDITIONS:
*EFFECTIVE FREQUENCY RANGE is measured at -10 dB re. Ref level (200-2000 Hz)

Firstly, quoting the bandwidth to -10dB is attempting to exaggerate the bandwidth which would normally be quoted at -3db levels. Secondly, dB is a relative measure which needs a reference value to make sense, normally a SPL or voltage. In this case they quote a frequency range of 200-2000Hz - which makes no sense at all. If they mean that the -10dB is relative to the max. SPL value in the 200-2000Hz range, it begs the question what is happening to the speaker output below 200Hz and above 2KHz?

I think a noticeable difference in the speaker specs is the standby power - down from 2.5W to 0.4W, this alone could be the major reason for the change given recent legislation in this area.

I also suspect that they will be cheaper to produce.

It will be interesting to hear the first reports of a (hopefully blind) side by side play-off!

The ICEpower amps will probably cost them less than the other sourced amps... Makes sense economically.

What's the bet that these new speakers do not sound as good as the originals?

The 4000's suffer from this result, why is B&O changing the innards?

...Why??

Is it just me, or is B&O starting to look like a lost child in a supermarket

You've got a point there. I would think that an upgrade would mean better performance -or lower prices -or both!
Or maybe just higher prices -like we're getting used to from B&O

Does anybody remember around 1991/92 when they released the MX/LX mkII-range..? The mkII models did actually have a better tube (Blackline S) than their predecessors -at a lower price!!! In Denmark the difference was 1000,-dkr (roughly 160-170$).

There is a little difference in the frequency range...but not much.
