Thanks for the feedback on the cap kit.
The Beovox S40 will also benefit from new caps. A kit is available
and replacing is about the same job as you did in the S45.2's.
Apart from the caps and foam rot, as mentioned, to some of them, the
S40's are usually in good shape.
There's really not a lot that can go wrong either.

Beovox S40 (and similar S35-2) are some of the best 2-way speakers from B&O.
I like their sound a lot and people who listen to them are often surprised to see that
they are in fact only 2-way.
White Beovox S40 is very rare to see - if original. A lot were painted but the original is thin laminate.
The value of the older things, generally, equals what people are prepared to pay.
White design generally goes a bit higher than wooden finishes and I've seen palisander
S40's go for something close to the amount you mention, so the price may not be unfair for
someone who really wants a pair like this. If you are such a person, I suggest you grab them
while you can.
Some Beovox S40 have foam woofer surrounds that will suffer from foam rot (it's repairable but
should cause a discount in the speakers price), others have rubber surrounds which will be fine.
Apprx. 50% chance of foam, according to my notes so worth checking.

Martin

Hi, Martin:

I finished the refurb of my S45-2s, and boy, oh boy, did your caps make all the difference in the world. I tried my old midrange, and it turned out it was fine afterall once the caps were replaced. I went ahead and permanently installed my old midrange and put yours aside for a spare.

I'm glad to hear the S40s receive the "Martin Seal of Approval." I just picked up a pair of these for next to nothing because the woofers need foam repair. I'm going to give that a go. I have a kit with new surround, adhesive, dust cap, and shims. Have read some of your notes on foam repair and watched a 20 minute video that came with a kit - looks like patience and a steady hand are the keys to success.

I haven't opened the S40s up yet. Will they likely need a cap replacement? Any other things I should look out for while I'm in there?

No CD, which I tend to play via Avant or BC1 televisions. I use a Pinnacle (Roku) N Radio unit with a phono/DIN adapter connected to the tape input of the BM2000 if I'm not listening to FM. A CD player could be connected in the same way, but there might be a difficulty in matching or complementing the appearance of the BM2000 (so a need to hide it away.) A small portable unit might look OK.

I'm using white S45's with a white Beomaster 2000 (1970's version). BM rebuilt/ recapped by Martin. It's a nice combination.

The white cases appear to be original spray finished over wood/ mdf that may in some respects be a softer finish than the rosewood/ teak versions. White finished 1970's equipment now fetches such a premium over the wood finishes that I wouldn't be surprised if speakers and amps started to get dismantled for white resprays. The S45 speakers have a tight fitting metal trim that would be extremely difficult to remove without damage (before a respray) so those sorts of speaker are less likely to have been tampered with and more likely to be original white.

Is there a view on the S40 speaker. Im looking to connect it to an beomaster 2000. Any experience with this ?. Being white it looks outstanding. its priced at $250 for the pair and looks in great condition, so before I invest......

Is it a good speaker, excellent, average etc ?..Also considering an S45 as an option.
