They did produce some speakers that were good - the ones that stand out are the S45-2 and the S120/MC120.2, but most of the rest are pretty average. The big speakers were good but so were lots of big speakers at the time - if you have a lot of speaker volume and good drivers and a modicum of good design, which B&O did, they should be good. Where B&O really started to stand out was when the produced the Penta and then the column speakers. The Penta solved the problem of poor bass by having lost of small units which worked to an extent, and the later speakers managed by tailoring the amplifiers to the speakers. If you look at the frequency response of the amplifiers in the Beolab 2500, you will see what I mean! Suddenly good sound could come from small packages and this was revolutionary. The advent of class D amplification as a viable method of amplifying speakers has also meant that this trend will continue. The ability to match amplifier and drive unit and have them in close proximity and not need large heatsinks is made for compact active speakers and ICE power. They can also use cheap drivers as they can tailor the amplifier to deal with any foibles.

The problem with passive speakers is that they have to have a flat frequency response - this is far trickier without the ability to match driver and amplifier.

Re: Beolab 8000 "look alikes" from DK

Daniel:

I ask myself though, did B&O miss a trick here?!! I wonder how many passive 8000's they'd sell if they ever went down that route. Just a thought.

That's what I always said, they should have several different BeoVox. My brother loves the BL8000. He will never give up his HiFi with amplifier, CD-player, LP etc, but he can change the speakers. He even thought of getting BL8000 but rejected for he didn´t want to pay for the amplifiers in the speakers. But if there was BeoVox 8000 he would have bought them.

I'm convinced there is a big market for B&O as the world is dominated by passive speaker. And they have the knowledge and reputation to make very good passive speakers.

Thats a very good point. They should venture into manufacturing passive speakers again except B&O like to have an amp to sell with passive speakers. I doubt they would sell passive speakers on their own. They have most definitely produced some awesome passive speakers in the past.

Re: Beolab 8000 "look alikes" from DK

9 LEE:
