I would start with checking the main rectifier which may have shorted. If there was smoke, you should find the suspect circuit areas just by looking around...

5500 Amplifier switching into standby

I wonder if somone can help me please I switched on my 5500 amp this morning and it went straight into standby when I tried to access the CD player, tape deck or radio.

It played the Cd player briefly then there was a loud burping noise through the speakers, and smoke started emitting from the back, I have been under the hood and it looks as though the relay that switches it into Standby has burnt out, whether it has taken anything else with it I don't know.

I am a mechanic retired) not a radio engineer so i may be clutching at straws, either way I need to have it mended, the problem is I now live in France (dept 36) and I don't know where to take it to get it repaired. ideally a B&O recommended service agent or somone who is conversant with 5500 Amplifier. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

I have had to resort to my old trusty Beolab 1700 ( which could do with a facelift but at least it works.)
