Specialist surface mount equipment would be needed and custom diagnostic stations.

Many repairs are done via software flash upadates.

There are not many of the old school TV reapair men left due to this but they still can make money repairing older kit and being up to date with their IT skills.

What you then have is the correct guy to deal with your fault.

I`d much rather have one of these guys deal with my B+O than some jumped up handyman who has been shown how to use the makers service tool and thinks he is qualified to tinker with mega bucks kit.

Re: Can PCBs be repaired??

Puncher:

I suspect the repair technician is also cheaper to employ if repairs are made at the module level.

That's true of many of the skilled trades I work with. Installers suffer the same problem. I've watched a few really great guys over the years essentially price themselves out of the market by becoming so good! Now they work for themselves and take on small jobs because it's all anyone can afford to pay them. On a $500k job I have 2-3 crews scurrying around and can't have one guy making $120/hr to do the same work.

It's a really unfortunate situation when the master-craftsmen of a given trade are left on the bench because people would prefer to pay less and get worse results.

Re: Can PCBs be repaired??

I suspect the repair technician is also cheaper to employ if repairs are made at the module level.

Re: Can PCBs be repaired??

The other problem is that B&O have stopped making the circuit diagrams available so repair is more complicated. Modules are all very well but once these are no longer available, we will be stuck!

Re: Can PCBs be repaired??

The benefit with replacing versus repairing is generally that labor is more expensive than most parts. So if a module can be replaced in under an hour versus several hours of tinkering, you actually come out ahead.

I've also seen repair shops close and it's my suspicion that as time goes by we'll (unfortunately) have access to less and less repair shops that are capable of genuine repairs. Module replacement is our best bet for widely available repair service heading into the future.

Can PCBs be repaired??

I have a Beolab 2000 that isn't working. I took it to B&O who said it requires a new PCB. The quote for this is a few hundred dollars (I think around $350 from memory). Can my existing PCB just be repaired? Or do I have to replace it. I know the B&O service centre here tends to just replace parts rather than fixing, and I understand why.. (could potentially be a lot of fiddling around for nothing).

Anyone got any suggestions?
