Mine has been returned from the service engineer in good working order. The invoice only says that faults were "traced" but does not give details of any parts supplied - only that speaker connections were cleaned. I am assuming it was something more than these sockets at fault.

just had the 6000 running for about (2) hours. the right side of the cooling fins is fine.

moving from <right> to <left> w/ my hand - it gets hot at about the split of the panels -near the centerline. it is quite hot on the left side -i would not want to leave my hand there for too long -or i'd have stripes, permanently. with that said -since replacing the speaker wires -it hasn't even *burped*... any suggestions w/ regard to the urgency i should have w/ getting this cooled down? parts availability?

Thankyou Martin. The 6000 is at my local B&O dealer and I am waiting to hear if they have repaired it. If they are unable to either carry out repairs or get parts I will be looking for further help. David

The Beomaster 6000 is known to run a bit warmer than other Beomasters
but anything warmer than your hand when playing at low volume is bad.

Note that the amplifier section is at the left side, the power supply at the right side of the large cooling fin.

As Peter suggests, replace and readjust the idle current trimmers and
it would make good sense to replace the electrolytic capacitors while in there. Most of them will be bad or at least marginal by now.
A capacitor kit is available.

Mine obviously has the fault with the resistors. Checked all the speaker cables. The heat still builds up when disconnected from the speakers. My 6000 has always got quite warm after extended use so maybe you have nothing to worry about.

Followup: I went ahead and replaced the speaker wires with brand new ones including new plugs... problem solved! The BM6000 is back to normal and functioning great! It is still rather warm though, so that will be next.

Great timing on this thread... My BM6000 just started doing same. I use it every couple of weeks, and it always seemed to run rather hot. Now as the volume goes up -it cuts to standby. I have noticed as I was playing with it, that there may well be a fault with my speaker wires -get near them (wiggle) and wham! straight to standby. I will play with it further and let you know.

Not as good in my experience but not bad! Better than the 4500/9500/MCL2P amplifier. Windows used to service these but less sure about this now they have changed ownership.

Thanks for the replies. I will try my local dealer for the repair although he makes it known he is not keen to work on equipment of this age. Is there anyone on beoworld specialising in the service of these in the north of England? Also just out of interest how does the beomaster 5500/6500/7000 compare with the 6000 amp?

Common problem on 6000s. The variable resistors or trimmers as Martin calls them go out of spec and this causes the overheating. Needs attention as it can cause other problems as well. The service manual is on site if you feel up to it or I am sure someone can help. Whilst there, replace the red capacitors.

Is it possible, that your speakers or wires causes the problem (short circuit somewhere, or several speakers parallel) ? To prove this, switch off all speakers test again. If it's still faulty, the BM needs repair. Chris

I've not used it for a couple of weeks but normally it is on all day. I bought it new in 1984. When switched on it works normally for a few minutes and then the power is cut off - presumably by a protection device - and the amp returns to stand-by. There is a much greater than normal amount of heat from the sink even after a few minutes (it normally generates heat but only after extended periods of use). The unit can be operated again after a period of cooling down - only to do the same thing again. Help appreciated. David
