Another question (for the faq?) is which speakers seem to suffer foam rot!

Not sure I want to take my RL140s apart just to check if they might suffer as the sound is still excellent

If it is the ABR then the RL60s suffer - otherwise it might be across the RL range

Moving off RLs and on to Compact Beovox - my C75s ( 2 pairs) show no signs of the problem that has afflicted most of the CX 50s and CX100 units.

(PS P45s are fine too!)

Thanks for the update chaps - i shall have a look. I did seem to remember a foam rot issue with the ABRs and, i have to say that i always thought the RL60s were pretty nasty speakers and whether i decide to expend any effort on them is another matter!

Anyway, fettling the rest of the system comes first!

Either as said above, or they may be suffering from Foam Rot, which is where the foam surround which holds the cone of the woofer in line so it performs like a piston rots away, causing the cone to rattle from side to side when it should be moving perfectly in and out.

Almost always worth repairing though.

Not sure the woofers have problems - its normally the Auxilliary Bass Radiator which rots - this looks like a speaker but is just a diaphragm with no voice coil of any sort.

congratulations!
Sounds like the baffles are loose in the RL's Martin has a fix I believe.
From what I remember remove the straps and then there are loads of screws to undo.

From what I remember, just remove every screw you can see on the rear of the cabinet (these also loosen the straps so they cab be removed). Some of the holes are quite deep and you will need a reasonably long screwdriver

If it is just the ABR surround that is shot I have a pair of B&O supplied replacements (they are not now a radiator but a plate incorporating a tuned port). Alternatively as Kevin says, ship the old ABR's to Dillen and he can re-foam them.

While you're in there Dillen also supplies a capacitor kit to renew all electrolytics in the crossover.

With an hours work they could sound brand new!!

Well, the phone call i have been hoping for for about 5 years finally happened, and my brother-in-law's sister and husband finally decided to let their Beosystem go!

Consequently, i am now the owner of a complete Beosystem 5000 plus a pair of RL60 speakers, for absolutely nothing. It all needs a little attention and basic servicing, despite having a hand-written receipt from my good self from when i repaired it for them about 10 years ago!

What i would be grateful to know is - how the hell do i get inside the RL60s??

Judging by the noises they are making and the rattling from inside the cabinets, they're ready for the bin, but it would be nice to open them up and take a look -any advice gratefully received!
